OBAMA'S "CHALLENGER MOMENT" AT FORT HOOD

I just took the time to watch Ronald Reagan's response to the Challenger disaster and his speech commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the D-Day invasion. They are still very moving after all of this time. If one cannot appreciate the orations presented (both content and delivery components), you are letting ideology overwhelm your cognitive processes.

Holy baby Jesus on a pogo stick. You don't have to agree with a President to appreciate their abilities. And FYI, the Challenger speech was read from a Teleprompter and the "Boys of Pointe du Hoc" speech was read from (gasp!) sheets of paper! And still magnificent.

You used 151 words and did not present one coherent thought. I see a great future for you with the Palin speechwritin' folks. Also.

Reread the original post very slowly. It says things you need to u-n-d-e-r-s-t-a-n-d.

"Stop badmouthing Republicans, it is too common here and disturbing."

Encouragement of examining one's beliefs and behavior during changing times is not "badmouthing." After 35 years as a registered Democrat, I now register as an Independent. The ideals and policies of the New Deal and the Great Society don't fit our times. The Democrats cannot let go of them so I let go of the Democrats. Rick is dead on in his argument.

SHOULD THE GOP HELP THE DEMOCRATS GOVERN?

Alex, I'll take Demonstrations of Effective Bipartisanship for $200, please.

ANSWER:
The Ryan White AIDS Care Act, State Children’s Health Insurance Program, and the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act.

QUESTION: What are laws that conservative Orrin Hatch and liberal Ted Kennedy worked together on successfully?

"My way or nothing" is for bloggers, their commenters and talk radio and its callers.

Politics is the art of compromise AND THE ABILITY TO COMPROMISE IS ESSENTIAL IN A DEMOCRACY. Ideologues (left or right)quickly become dictators.

A WRITER'S LAMENT

I have read this blog for years, commented, been banned, cursed at and learned a great deal in the process. The proprietor is a very good writer and is usually quite lucid and clear. In the next to the last para, you mentioned two possible possible problems with the piece you wrote, i.e., poor writing or viewing the writing through personal prisms. I would add an additional possibility that is particularly related to political writing. In blogs, talk radio, MSM, etc., there is a great deal of what was once called "groupthink." It looks like this is a part of the responses you received. Consumers of Limbaugh,Beck,Olbermann, etc., are shaped to think in particular ways and if anything does not immediately fit the mold, it is rejected and attacked.

Your writing is also an easy target for this phenomenon as most of your writing requires thought and contemplation to understand. You don't choose to take an easy way, rather you are knowledgeable and thoughtful and slow with the red meat rabble rousing most bloggers rely upon. And while you would disagree, a pretty good academic as well.

Lastly, you make a good point about changes in American society. We are moving into an age that is still ill-defined and uncertain. We are being forced to at some point let go of the carbon based economy that has driven progress for over 100 years and don't really know what will replace it. We survived the post-industrial age, but only by creating a financial system of smoke and mirrors that has collapsed and has not been fixed; again we have nothing clear to replace derivatives, etc. The liberal efforts to just keep adding more of the same old fixes just won't work. And it appears that conservatives are stuck on efforts to conserve outmoded and now unneeded ideas. God help us all and keep writing.

BUCHANAN AND HIS 'WHITE MAN'S LAMENT'

A re-read of Oakshott's "On Being Conservative" was useful after reading this excellent article. Rick, if you have not already done so, it would be very useful to have your list of the most influential conservative readings/books. I was not exposed to much conservative thought in college (everyone is shocked, I am sure), but stumbled onto Hayek, Buckley, Burke and some others. Your ideas on important conservative readings would be much appreciated.

THE NFL IS WORRIED ABOUT A 'RACIST' OWNER?'

In 2005, a group that included George Soros attempted to buy the Washington Nationals MLB baseball team. Opposition to Soro's liberal politics helped railroad the bid. One example, "It's not necessarily smart business sense to have anybody who is so polarizing in the political world," Rep. John E. Sweeney (R-N.Y.) said. Link to Washington Post, June 28, 2005. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/27/AR2005062701447.html

Rush Limbaugh is not a racist. He makes millions being provocative. The 1st Amendment protects his speech, as well as that of George Soros. While what you say is protected, the fact that what you say can bite you in the ass in a serious manner, liberal or conservative, is not protected by the 1st Amendment. Man up, Rush. You fouled your own nest on this one.

THE LEFT IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ABOUT JOE WILSON

This may be the funniest thing you have ever written! Rick is the one blogger/writer that can be counted on to not get caught up in the "our kooks are better than your kooks" silliness.

And yes, when it comes to the health care debate, Obama has been so busy walking on water that he just now figured out the water is a flooded basement. Prediction: Obama will sign a health care bill that will change absolutely nothing. Democrats will will all give themselves a blue ribbon and go home a "winner".

MICHAEL JACKSON, WORLD FAMOUS PEDOPHILE, DEAD AT 50

Rick said:
"Nothing whatsoever to do with politics, political ideology, or anything like that. I am an expert. And I put it to you that judging talent is hardly subjective and is based on experience and knowledge - two attributes that I happen to have in this area."

I spoke of musical preference and record sales, neither of which has much to do with talent. It would appear that your expertise is Broadway and musical theater, and I appreciate your knowledge and expertise. However, the talent that it takes to succeed there would not be recognized talent for a blues singer, a country singer or a lot of other genres. Judging talent is not subjective, but it is genre specific. And your knowledge and experience would not be worth two cents in the aforementioned genres or dozens of others, including pop music. Comparisons across genres is illogical, if not simply stupid. Comparing Michael Jackson to Ethel Merman, as if he had presented himself as a musical theater star, makes no sense. It would seem someone so enlightened and knowledgeable as yourself would not fall into such a simplistic trap. It would rather be like comparing a Formula One car driver to a racehorse jockey. Yes, they both race and yes there are some with much more ability than others, but saying Willie Shoemaker couldn't compare to Juan Fangio is just silly. And an expert on either would be a fool for making a comparison. You missed the mark by a country mile on this one and no amount of insults and name calling can rescue you.

And of course I apologize for my idiotic comparison of left and right. How could I forget conservatism's unwavering adherence to moral relativism and multiculturalism that finds value in all cultures, while the rigid, intolerant liberals insist on seeing American values as something the world either envies or despises, because they are just the best. Ta,ta!

On of the wonderful things about music is that different styles appeal to different people, allowing a huge cornucopia of music to choose from. Musical talent and musicianship don't have a lot to do with record sales. Personal taste does. Rick sees Ethel Merman as a very talented Broadway legend. That's good. When I listened to Merman, I heard loud yowling. To each his own. My favorite music may not appeal to you and your favorites may not appeal to me. You nor I are wrong, just different. Of course, I am a liberal and see a lot of things as subjective in nature. Conservatives tend to see things as black and white, right or wrong, and liberal tend to see many shades of gray and personal choice as important. I don't think conservatives are bad, we just see things differently.

And yes, Michael Jackson was a very sick little shrapnel of humanity.

Nothing whatsoever to do with politics, political ideology, or anything like that. I am an expert. And I put it to you that judging talent is hardly subjective and is based on experience and knowledge - two attributes that I happen to have in this area.

It is likely you heard Merman in her late 50's or 60's. I would direct your attention to the original cast album of
Annie Get your Gun.. She brought the house down night after night - the same held true for Hello Dolly, and especially her turn as Rose in Gypsy which many critics believe to be the greatest performance in the history of musical comedy. Her stage presence would have dwarfed Jackson if the two appeared together.

I agree that liking styles of music is a matter of taste and personal preference. But talent is talent to someone who recognizes it and has learned to evaluate it. As an actor, director, dancer, it was a survival skill for anyone wishing to make a living in the business. Being able to gauge the competition was necessary for success.

btw - I have met more close minded, smug, self righteous liberals in my time than conservatives. Your analysis of right-left is so ridiculously generalized as to render it pathetically ignorant. Advice: Take people one at a time as they come at you. Otherwise, you end up looking pretty silly when saying that conservatives or liberals "tend" to analyze the world a certain way.

ed.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE RIGHT ATTITUDE

Let's see, Ms. Yockey. Someone said something you found very offensive and so if we don't get him fired, it will encourage millions of bullies. Does the word "irony" appear in your dictionary?
