I DARE YOU TO MAKE ME A DEMOCRAT

Our newly elected leaders in Congress would prefer to see the entire Iraq mission fail than see it through to its only acceptable conclusion.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of these lousy bastards are cutting deals with Syrians and Iranians on the side, anticipating that we evil Americans will be forced to take a bite of a very big humble pie as our forces are prematurely withdrawn from Iraq.

When did the United States forget how to win wars?

A DECLARATION OF (SEMI-AUTONOMOUS) INDEPENDENCE (SORT OF)

Rick,

While I agree with the general sentiment, you've downplayed some critical factors that negatively impacted Bush's leadership during the course of this war. You're right - he's ultimately responsible for his mistakes, but any analysis that dismisses these factors, IMHO, remains incomplete.

1) A press that was opposed to Bush's Presidency in the first place was bound to offer only lukewarm support immediately following the attacks. And by the end of 2001, the only allies he had in the press were FOX News, talk radio and the bloggers. Not an insignificant PR force, but, collectively, these voices don't control the narrative of which you've written, especially when every other reactionary liberal journalist with an axe to grind is spinning virtually every development to cast Bush in a negative light.

If you'll excuse an extremely cycnical observation, war presents unique opportunities to govern for those in power. Whether or not Bush squandered those opporunties, the fact remains that pretty much everything he did pre 9/11 an post 9/11 - with a brief respite following the attacks - was either misreported or underreported by an unrelenting and unforgiving press. For all intents and purposes, the MSM appeared to acting more as the propaganda wing of the Democratic party, various "progressive" causes and the UN than as disinterested observers.

How effective can the presidential bully pulpit be when MSM gatekeepers filter the message as they see fit and report on every opposition talking point as though it's a legtimate story?

2) Over the course of the last year or so, there appear to have been a number of current and former members of the IC, State, etc., who compromised various anti-terror policies by leaking classified information to the press. Were I conspiracy theorist nutcase like the loose change jackasses, I'd say it was nothing less than a concerted effort by disaffected civil servants, political appointees and the President's political opponents to cripple his admininstration. Since I'm not, however, I'll chalk it up to those people assuming prerogatives that were never theirs to begin with and an adminstration that lacked the will to prosecute them.

In any event, I agree that only those completely devoid of any historical perspective really believe Bush is the worst president in American history and that, but for the grace of the Democratic party, liberals would be making nice with a pack of rabid wolverines as guests of a neocon reeducation camp somewhere in the UP.

I do have one request. Please don't devote all your efforts over the next two years to casting aspersions on the Bush adminsitration. You'd sound too much like every else. Besides, someone has to keep an eye on those Democrats in Congress. I mean, who else is gonna do it - CNN or the NYT?

THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY

Rick,

Contrary to Pelosi's placations, I'm guessing the House will vote for articles of impeachment before the August recess next year.

Thoughts?

OH FOR GOD'S SAKE GET A GRIP... IT WON'T BE THAT BAD

Should Democrats resume control of either or both houses, there's no need to go off the rail. The United States has survived far worse.

At worst, they'll undertake a legal coup d'etat and relegate themselves to permanent irrelevancy by 2008. Like the DFL during the last midterm elections, they won't be content to shoot themselves in the foot; they'll whip out a 12 guage and blow their whole damn leg off.

At best, nothing will get done for the next two years, after which another Republican will be elected President and either or both houses will return to Republican control. And hopefully it will be a Republican administration that leads according to Republican principles.

KERRY: AS COLD AS THEY COME

Riddle me this, Will, provided you're one of these "I support the troops but oppose the war" types. How do you suppose Democrats and their MSM propagandists would have reacted if a Republican had said this?

Rick's assessment of Senator Lurch's cynicism is about as accurate as any you're likely to come across. You're fooling yourself if you actually believe Lurch was referring to Bush, and this was nothing more than a poorly delivered joke.

Some joke. I'm sure all of the veterans who have served their country at the price of an arm, a leg, an eye or a life would be howling with laughter at Lurch's irreverant wit.

Any 18 year old PFC or Airmen straight out of high school who volunteers for military service in a time of war commands far more respect than the Democratic party's favorite oxygen thief.

I guess this is how Democrats are going to be "smarterer" and "tougherer" on terrorism - by publicly insulting American soldiers, sailors and airmen.

If anyone ever needed an ass-kicking, it was this POS.

IS DEFINING "VICTORY" IN IRAQ AN EXERCISE IN FUTILITY?

How interesting it is to learn that terrorists don’t hate America, that they hate Republicans and work to help Democrats in the United States. I thought terrorists hated America and all Americans, seeking to kill us, one and all. But no, they are racheting up violence in Iraq now just to help the Democrats in the 2006 election.

Ed, the point I was trying to make, and I think Rick would concur, is that the Iraqi insurgents and foreign terrorists fighting in Iraq have some insight into how they can influence domestic politics in the United States. If you're suggesting that this is beyond the realm of plausibility, refer to the historical evidence that reveals how foreign agents have exploited the divisions within our own society before.

Just because the insurgents and terrorists in Iraq are fighting the most powerful, technologically advanced military force in the history of human civilization with assault rifles and homemade bombs doesn't mean they're stupid. They are wielding the PR weapon - albeit with some help from certain members of Congress and CNN - more effectively than we are at the moment.

Rick,

The insurgency in Iraq wouldn’t be nearly as successful as it has been if Saddam’s Baathists and the foreign terrorists had not received de facto political support from Democrats and moral support from western journalists. The “insurgents” are familiar with American history and realize that, while the United States can never be defeated militarily, sapping the will of the American people to continue prosecuting this war is an attainable objective. It worked for Ho Chi Minh, and it can work for Moqtada al Sadr and his Iranian backers, too.

In any event, the way this war has exposed the divisions among Americans, and the way these divisions have been successfully exploited by enemies of the United States to their advantage strongly suggest that we are caught in the throes of a severe identity crisis. When we opt for legal strategies to deal with military threats, and some among us can openly advocate on behalf of people who continue killing Americans, some serious national soul-searching is in order, and a reckoning among us may be required before we can claim any military victory on any foreign battlefield.

CNN SEES NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN US AND TERRORISTS

Not even sure where to begin...this is why I quit blogging.

I cannot fathom what CNN intended to accomplish by airing this terrorist propaganda film. What is clear, however, is that none of the people involved in the decision to broadcast this garbage have any family members serving in Iraq. If any of them did, someone would have strenuously objected to giving terrorists free publicity.

My brother was sent to Iraq two weeks ago. If he shows up in a snuff film on CNN, you'd better start checking your six, Mr. Turner. Often.

IS A REPUBLICAN COMEBACK IN THE CARDS?

I'm not a gambling man, but I would wager that Dems and their MSM operatives will hit Republicans with another dozen or so strategically timed "scandals" between now and November 7th. I wouldn't be surprised if some anonymous source on the Hill informs us that Dennis Hastert owns stock in a Tiajuana donkey show or Mark Kline rolled back odometers when he sold used cars.

No doubt the accusations of Republican malfeasance will become increasingly creative the closer we get to election day. And the self-appointed guardians of truth will be right there, eating every single one of these bullshit sandwiches and asking for seconds.

But in spite of the MSM's complicity with Dems, Republicans really screwed the pooch this time around. If they lose either or both houses, the lion's share of the responsibility will rest with their extremely ineffective Congressional leadership.
