BOEHLERT MISSING THE POINT ABOUT AP SOURCING

It’s a question Boehlert doesn’t even bother to address because his mission is to slime “warbloggers” as he calls them by over generalizing and ascribing non-existent motives to their efforts.

One wonders if their raison d'etre isn't simply to automatically oppose whatever position blogosphere rightists take on any given issue.

Unrelated, but I think it's also telling to contrast the way our Huffponian brethren reacted to news of Laura Bush's cancer treatment and the way the major rightwing bloggers reacted to Senator Johnson's apparent stroke. For all the hue and cry they raise about conservatives' lack of humanity, they see absolutely nothing wrong with wishing the most awful fates on those with whom they disagree.

CROCODILE TEARS FROM THE LEFT

Rick,

You should write more pieces like this. I always enjoy seeing anti-Bush, anti-American, anti-everything tomes like Smith's ripped to shreds.

Keep fighting the good fight.

THE REFUGEE PROBLEM IN IRAQ: BAD TO WORSE

One thing these refugees bring to the countries where they flee is instability. And authoritarian regimes like Syria and Iran detest instability. The question is do they fear it enough to stop stirring the pot in Iraq?

Apparently the answer to that question in no, on account of the fact that recently manufactured Iranian made mines(IEDs), ammunition and assault rifles continue to turn up in the hands of the so-called insurgents.

BTW, I don't think you're a tool or a closet lefty. If what you claim is true, then Iran has overplayed its hand by meddling in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the MSM should be investigating it more thoroughly. But if you're wrong, then Iran is positioning itself to be the last man standing, so to speak.

AMERICA COMING TO ITS OWN CONSENSUS ABOUT THE ISG

Rick,

In short, it is in the national interest of Syria and Iran to help tamp down the violence and prop up the Iraqi government if we make it clear that we’re leaving.

Do you know something the rest of us don't?

In light of the evidence that the Iranians have done their damnedest to incite sectarian violence by arming militias and sending Hezbollah trainers and their own agents to Iraq, it's more likley they'll feed off the carcase of a dead nation rather than attempt to fill whatever vacuum appears if the US disengages.

I'm aware this comment could very well elicit an acerbic reply, but I really don't understand where you're getting this idea from. We know the Iranians have been engaging the United States, Israel and other Western nations by terrorist proxy since the revolution. Iraq as a failed state would give Iran the same thing Iraq as a stable democracy would give the United States: a base from which to operate. Arguably, they already have one in Lebanon, but that's small potatoes compared to being able to siphon off Iraq's oil wealth and use it to expand terrorist operations.

Again, Iraq as Afghanistan before 2001 provides Iran with the territory it needs to transform itself into the regional strongman. If one if it's neighbors has a problem, all Iran will have to do is dispatch a bunch of terrorists to take care of it. Nothing like a few car bombs going off to advance your strategic interests.

ASKING MEN TO DIE TO "MITIGATE DEFEAT"

The Canine Pundit's predictions concerning premature withdrawal from Iraq:

1) Iraq becomes Afghanistan redux. If the U.S. withdraws before ensuring that Iraq can hold its own against its neighbors, the best that we can hope for is partition, possibly with Saudi Arabia and/or Jordan taking the lead in ensuring that it's carried out relatively peacefully. More likely, Iran will set upon Iraq and use it in the same manner Pakistan used Afghanistan during and after its war with the Soviet Union.

2) A bullseye painted on the back of every single American. Failure to stabilize Iraq before leaving will be a clarion call for every rogue state in the world to engage the United States by terrorist proxy. The lesson will be that the United States lacks the political will required to effectively bring the fight to the enemy. I won't venture a guess at how many Americans might die, but this nation could very well be fated to die a death by a thousand cuts should our superiors decide it's time to cut and run.

IRAQ: THE "SCORCHED EARTH" ALTERNATIVE

Drango, google "Iranian agents in Iraq." Review the sources and draw your own conclusions, but don't simply dismiss facts because they may not fit your perception of reality.

Drango,

Conduct your own research, but Iranian agents have been captured and killed in Iraq by the US military during the course of this war - just because CNN isn't reporting it doesn't mean it isn't happening. Iran has been supplying and advising various Shia insurgent/terrorist groups from the outset, which is consistent with it's lengthy history of engaging the United States and Israel by means of terrorist proxy.

Can't blame them for sticking with a winning strategy, but we should take a long hard look at ourselves if we continue to ignore a major source of this mayhem. Should Iran actually build or acquire a nuclear/atomic weapon, it will only be a matter of time before it finds its way into the hands of one of the many terrorist groups Iran sponsors.

Rick,

Of more immediate concern should be the possibility (probability?) that early withdrawal could encourage jihadists within the United States and abroad to execute more attacks. The Bush-hating crowd has claimed this war is a failure since it started in spite of the fact that the enemy hasn't carried out an attack in the U.S. since September 11. If we pull the troops out of Iraq now, and it could very well have the effect of painting a big old bullseye on the back of every American.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Happy Thanksgiving, Rick. By now you must be aware that my eloquence is somewhat lacking in a forum as distinguished as RN, so I'll let my brother in Iraq speak for me. This is from an e-mail he sent earlier today:

I hope everyone enjoys the day, watches a little football, and maybe take a minute to look out your windows as far as you can see, and remember you are free. Happy Thanksgiving.

THEY HAVEN'T LEARNED A GODDAMNED THING

One of the reasons I stopped voting for Democrats was precisely because of the kinds of things Republicans are doing now.

It's almost as though they're conspiring to create a political vacuum. To what end I have no idea, other than pissing people off, maybe.
