RIGHT OR WRONG, BUSH MADE AN IMPACT

If B-Hobie ends up being the kind of Chief Executive I expect, Bush's place in history will be augmented considerably. I hope he does well, but I agree with the previous poster who told us to expect a series of one-term Presidents until the country recovers economically. I have a felling it's going to take several years.

OOGEDY-BOOGEDY AND BIBBIDI, BOBBIDI, BOO

Can somebody please tell me why the hell the common wisdom surrounding McCain's lousy campaign and subsequent loss is that GOP bible-thumpers tainted his bid? If this really is the case, then the GOP should stop trying to run on social issues. Considering the fact that the Democrats have the schools, universities, press and unions, Republicans are going to lose every single time in all but the most staunchly conservative regions, and they certainly won't be able to remain viable at the national level.

But this isn't what really happened. McCain ran a lousy campaign and many Republican voters - myself included - voted for him only because the alternative was unacceptable. After the 2004 election, Congressional Republicans went off the rails and started spending money liken drunken sailors on shore leave (no offense to present and former members of the USN), and it alienated a lot of conservatives such as me. But people like Parker are shooting pretty wide of the mark when they claim Republicans lost due to their candidate's lack of religious zealotry. They've been losing since 2006 because they tossed aside a core conservative principle - minimizing the size of government and its corresponding intrusion in people's lives.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Ms. Parker. If this keeps up, I may have to resurrect the Canine Pundit.

DISSENT IN THE AGE OF OBAMA

We are a nation of 300 million people and this is the best Vanity Fair can do in finding racism that “isn’t being reported” by the media?

In this brave new world, all opposition to a Democrat Congress and the Executive will be considered racist, homophobic, ethnocentric, mysogonistic, etc. Two and two WILL equal five or ten or one or whatever our new overseers tell us it is. Didn't you get the memo, Rick? BTW, excuse me for mixing my literary allusions - I'm out of practice.

There is going to be a huge temptation on the part of the left and Obama to use the race card over and over again to stifle dissent. I doubt whether they will be able to resist the pull of such a powerful weapon. They certainly didn’t resist it during the campaign. There is no reason to expect that if they can shoehorn race into any critique of Obama’s policies, they will do so regularly and shamelessly.

Anyone who doesn't see this coming down the pike is either deluded or simply stupid. The majority of the fourth estate enthusiastically endorsed this tactic throughout the campaign, and I seriously doubt their zeal will abate now that their demigod is about to be inaugurated. This is why, for the first time in my life, someone whose executive capabilities remain inscrutable on account of race, will take the oath of office on January 20.

As far as stifling dissent is concerned, in the words of the Vice President-elect, "gird your loins." I would not be at all surprised if some of the leading conservative pundits and/or bloggers will be indicted for inciting so-called hate crimes before Obama's Presidential tenure expires.

Make sure your accounts are in order, Rick. I strongly suspect they're preparing to employ the IRS in way that would have made Nixon blush.

ELECTION DAY THOUGHTS

Rick,

The upside of tonight's results is that Reid and Pelosi are going to be pulling the strings for the next two years, not Obama. If the last two years are any indication of how badly they can f$%k up the federal government, Republicans need only to stay out of their way until 2010. Republicans must direct their efforts toward regaining either or both houses of Congress, and cultivate the kind of leadership that can depose the anointed one in 2012. Think Newt Gingrich without the baggage.

THE TOP TEN POLITICAL SPEECHES OF ALL TIME

Great piece, Rick, although I agree with Pamela that the Gettysburg Address should top the list.

BTW, congratulations on your progress toward achieving your goal of earning your keep as a writer. Keep up the good work.

WAS MATTHEW MURRAY ENABLED BY THE CHRISTIAN BASHERS?

It truly is a matter of not understanding people of faith as well as a distrust of anyone who believes in anything so strongly.

As a Christian, I am compelled to point out that whatever slings and arrows Christians (especially in America) feel as though they are suffering in the current political climate, it pales in comparison to His suffering. Our faith should inform us in this respect but, unfortunately, the sound and fury prevails.

CHAVEZ LIVES DOWN TO HIS REPUTATION

I always wonder what side their bread is butterd on when they tell us anything a Republican does is suspect (and probably evil), but we can trust people like Saddam Hussein, Robert Mugabe, Kim Jong Il and the mad mullahs of Iran. Is it political theater, or do they really hate other Americans that much?
