The Beckian Wing of Conservatism

EBJ (#32) is a poster child for why so much of the Republican right wing could be mistaken for being brain dead.

I happen to be one of those lefties who is very interested in "the truth," which is why I have written as many posts critical of Obama recently as those praising him.

Rick appeals to me because he's an indy thinker with whom I often disagree but almost always makes me think.

Beck and people like EBJ, on the other hand, make my brain numb over.

GLENN BECK AND THE RADICAL RIGHT

No problem, none whatsoever, with your being forgiven in advance because you're not exactly sure what you want to say. But this post comes hard on the heels of another where you were quite certain about what you wanted to say.

You accused Oliver Willis -- and myself by extension -- of being irrational by connecting the Glenn Becks to albeit isolated incidents where lunatic fringe right-wingers act out by doing naughty things like killing police officers.

Your "behavior," as I noted at my own blog and in a post elsewhere today, was the grown-up equivalent of a child closing his eyes, putting fingers in his ears and chanting nothings to try to drown out a parent or teacher.

So why have you decided to open your eyes, take your fingers out of your ears and listen up? Is it because these people are, as you yourself say "dead serious" or did you just need an excuse to use the word "apostasy," which is a favorite of mine, as well?

ALZHEIMER'S: THE PERSONAL IS POLITICAL

Terry's messages are inspiring as is your post. As it is, my own mother died of a related degenerative neurological disorder that makes Alzheimer's seem almost benign by comparison.

Your post did fail to mention one aspect of Alzheimer's research that no doubt many of your right-wing readers object to -- the use of stem cells.

I HAVE COME NOT TO PRAISE CAPITALISM BUT TO BURY IT

Your hysterics over Obama notwithstanding, of course its the end of capitalism AS WE KNOW IT and it's damned well time.

The model is just fine, thank you, but its application over the last several decades -- Republican and Democratic administrations alike -- has done nothing less than create an income gap so yawning and systemic abuses so profound that what is surprising about our present straits is that it took so long to get where we are.

ON FAILURE - OBAMA'S AND AMERICA'S

A truly lazy effort from start to finish.

Comparing the Iraq war to a massive economic meltdown is disingenuous. Furthermore, how could the U.S. have "lost" a war that still has not been won?

Comparing some libruls "silent" failure wishes regarding Iraq to some conservatives in-your-face failure wishes cinches it.

This post gets an "F."

IT'S BECAUSE I LOVE YOU

Hi Rick:

The contrast between the way that you and Ed Morrissey (my other favorite right-of-center blogger) covered CPAC speaks volumes. More than ever, Ed seems afraid of losing his franchise -- or his radio show or something -- because he managed to make it all the way through the conference without once writing about or taking issue with Limbaugh, Coulter and Company or calling the phony baloney tea parties for what they were.

While you did pull some punches, you had no such compunction to play it safe. You can be an important voice in creating the "groundswell" of which Manning speaks in the previous comment.

Go for it.

EXPLOITING TAXPAYER RAGE NOT THE WAY BACK FOR GOP

Beyond the mandatory Obama ankle biting, this is a great post. I hope a lot of people read it -- starting with the governor of Louisiana.

THE STIMULUS SHOULD GO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD

There is not one word in your post -- not one single word -- that indicates you have a clue about how bad things are on Main Street.

Instead it's artful political posturing, the immaturity of the president's rhetoric and bemoaning the next special interests in line for tin-cup handouts.

As un-Republican as it seems, might I suggest that you actually get off your high horse and get out and about to try to gauge the depths of the malaise?

I'm going to suggest that if doing so is not a humbling experience, then maybe you will bring some down-to-earth perspective to your subsequent pontificating once you're comfily back on that high horse.

I know how bad it is. But you're running around like a chicken without your head when these are the times that dictate prudence not panic. We are in a helluva mess and a bill that is going to make things worse would be true "catastrophe."

You would probably be surprised as to how much of that stimulus I support. I would even put back some of the stuff that was cut. But there is at least $200 and closer to $300 billion in that bill that should never have been put in there - that the only reason a lot of what is in there is included is because Obama and the Democrats wouldn't be able to pass it unless they could attach it to a bill they could then scare people into supporting.

It is the worst kind of dishonesty to claim otherwise. I personally would prefer a little more tax cutting and a little less spending to green up the government - not that it isn't a good idea but that it belongs in a separate bill. But I could live with a lot of the spending to help the states, health care, unemploymnet benefits, and the like. Education is fine but giving money to Harvard or any other rich school sitting on multibillion dollar endowments and building funds would be a slap in the face to taxpayers. Give money to Milwaukee to build schools when they have 15 vacant right now? That's an example of "stimulus?" Please.

No - if we are going to be panicked into passing this monstrosity I would prefer to see it defeated and have the Congress and president start over. Not going to happen. Obama will get his money for the NEA and ACORN, for union only construction, for bailing out states above and beyond what I mentioned earlier because of poor management, and a host of other provisions that will not add one iota to the economy but reward Democratic constituencies while porking up the bill.

Instead of accusing me of - whatever - you should be asking yourself at least a couple of the questions being raised about this bill. Evidently, you prefer blind partisanship to intelligent citizenship.

ed.
