WHAT ARE WE "WINNING?"

If you want to know what the stakes are in the Middle East, just look at Korea. North and South Korea have very similar cultures, the dramatic difference in their outcomes arises because we defended democracy in South Korea, but withdrew our forces from North Korea.

It is true that we aren't especially loved by either side, but it is also true that South Korea is a net benefit to the US, and to the world, whereas the existence of North Korea is a net detriment.

It is also true that democracy takes time. After France was liberated, even with its history of democracy, it took a while to restore order and to form a stable government.

Tyrannies, even contained tyrannies, don't work out well in the long run. If the Middle East can be put on a road to popular self-determination--through free markets and free elections--they will quickly evolve in the way that South Korea has. Retaining their own ethnic heritage and culture, but as productive and prosperous partners in a peaceful globe.

But I doubt we will be loved or even thanked. Just look at other places we have liberated from tyranny--France, Germany, Italy, etc. No love, and they now even feign to object to the principle of militaristic liberation, but still it was worthwhile.
