SEVERE CRACKDOWN BY MUSHARRAF: DEMOCRACY HOPES FADE (UPDATE: MUSHARRAF SPEAKS)

"The left is already blaming Bush (and speculating that the Administration is jealous of Musharraf and will declare their own State of Emergency to hang on to power next year)..."

That lefty paranoia stuff gets so old on one level, but never ceases to amuse on another.

Then it stops being funny altogether when they send parades of celebrities down to visit, and thus throw support to, Fidel and Hugo et. al.

MY TEN FAVORITE MYTHIC HEROES OF ALL TIME

I think it must have been when I was around 10, maybe a bit earlier that I ran across John Carer in "The Synthetic Men of Mars" (#9 in that series according to Amazon).

It provided fodder for dreams for a long, long time -- I enjoyed it immensely. I think I picked it up in a Church basement sale for a nickel or a dime, but don't recall (and am fairly certain I didn't) reading any of the other books in the series.

A good choice for No. 1 though, IMHO.

A SALAMANDER STORY

It's harmless fun Rick, let her enjoy her salamander! I do kind of doubt that a wild one will live very long in captivity, even if the cats are thwarted in their designs on him.

Almost a year ago now, I suddenly decided I needed an aquarium, and got one, added two goldfish (who've doubled in size now) and once the environment was stabilized added a snail for clean up duty. Lots of fun, more than I thought it'd be.

Not to mention that I'm proud of myself for not killing them inadvertently somehow!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BLOG

Looking forward to your continued growth and as well as your challenging -- critics be damned -- posts. If I agreed with everything you posted I'd be reading the wrong blog.

THE CHASM BETWEEN US

Peep says: "It’s all a distraction. Did anyone notice that our senate just passed a NON BINDING resolution about a f*cking newspaper ad?"

You really think it was about the ad?

Peep continues: "Did anyone notice that George Bush just said that Nelson Mandela is dead?"

Are you sure about that? Got cites?

WHY THE FUSS? IT'S JUST A HOLE IN THE GROUND.

Rick closes: "The tone deafness of that crew at the White House when it comes to the base – on up to and including Bush – never ceases to amaze me."

Sadly, the tone deafness of the White House, when it comes to Iran, has been amazing me since 1979. It has been a mistake for way too long.

It'd be nice, though it'll never happen, if we announced the addition of a few more carrier groups to gulf a few minutes after Ahmadinejad lands at JFK, then the next day raise the terror alert in NYC to Red and cancel all flights including his return flight...

TWILIGHT OF THE EVERMORE

The next three weeks are the best three weeks of the year. Yesterday was a mob scene on the beach, last night it was time to remove the pin from the beach badge and string it onto the bead chain next to the collection from previous years.

This morning (and each succeeding 'morn until the average daytime temp drops below 68; often well into October) was serenity, the beach had been carefully combed of the debris generated over the weekend by the outside intruders that won't be seen again until Memorial Day.

The parking meters stand silent sentinel over empty spaces, even those sparse spaces that may be filled with cars will be occupied without filling the soon to be removed meters without fear of ticketing.

The coffee is still hot, the soda still cold, the sand and water still warm, but the shouts and laughter of the crowds have succumbed to the chirps of the terns and roar of the surf. Better times are not to be had!

"YOU VILL DO VUT I SAY AND BE HEALTHY, EH <em>SCHWEINHUND?"</em>

Syn, Sorry to hear about the consternation felt by your father at his untimely demise. I'm sure genetics plays a part, perhaps a larger part than we know, but regardless, collectivism is not a suitable "solution" to me either.

Though these are anecdotal, my grandmother lived to just shy of 106, following pretty much the lifestyle of your father that you outlined. A friends grandmother, though falling considerably short of 106, still lived a long time, but drank and smoked as she wished.

For me, I do what I want, when I want, how I want and am willing to accept a premature demise for my choices, because they are my choices. That said, I've eaten my way through many dire warnings about this food or that, that are subsequently found to be so much hooey and reversed. So even though it feels like I might be doing bad to my body, the odds are it ain't as bad as they want me to believe; so who knows how the cards will play out for my longevity?

Either way, I'm at peace with my decisions. If the circumstances arise, I'm far more likely to pull a "Zevon" and run out the last months/year the same way I did the rest of my life, rather than opt for operations/transplants etc. and get hooked up to machines in a sterile environment.

If all of his previous pontifications weren't sufficient reason for calling him on "jumping the shark" this most certainly is!

Isn't time to guffaw quietly and ignore the idiot? I mean, it's not like he has any chance of winning either the nomination or the general, so why not ignore him?

It appears most of the MSM is starting to, though that may be to stop his more idiotic positions from getting too much airtime.

OVER THE RAINBOW

I'm very glad to hear that things are going reasonably well at the moment Rick. Hopefully there'll be enough sun to evaporate enough water so if the rains come on Wednesday the results will be inconsequential.
