KARBALA RAID SCRUTINIZED

Why would Iran want to risk a confrontation with the US over Iraq? After all, all they have to do is wait for us to leave and the whole place falls into Tehran's lap.

ANTI-WAR PROTEST: WHERE IS EVERYONE?

I believe that much of the left has figured out that mass demonstrations are really not all that politically effective these days. And given the unpopularity of this administration and its policies in the Middle East, they might have a point. After all, this profound disliking of everything Bush was not brought about by any "Days of Rage" or "May Day" demonstrations.

Today's show in Washington was underwhelming, with less than 100,000 in attendance. Think how many would have turned out for a similar spectacle in 1971.

If anything, mass protest is an obsolete concept carried over from the Vietnam era. Today that sort of thing is done much more effectively on the internet.

If you want to beat the left you'll have to do it in ways that reflect current conditions. If you're hoping for them to discredit themselves with repeated trips to the barricades I'm afraid your wait will be in vain.

ROMNEY AND RELIGION

The GOP frontrunners seem to have some problems early on. McCain's rapidly fading presence seems due in large part to both his age and his perceived inability to disagree with anything George W. Bush has to say. Romney is running into resistance for reasons cited above, though I think that Rick has downplayed the problems many conservative activist Christians have with Mormonism. And, if the polls are right, the GOP frontrunner is Rudy Giuliani. Rudy, a distincly Blue State personality if ever there was one, has a colorful past that will take some explaining. Case in point:

Which leaves all the also-rans. My take? Do not underestimate the primary vote-getting power of Sam Brownback, or the sheer political ability of Newt Gingrich. And if these two should agree to some sort of political alliance designed to save the soul of the GOP from its moderate wing, all bets are off.
