MORE ON THE HSU SWINDLE OF SOURCE FINANCING

Under the Uniform Commercial Code, most states did away with post-dated checks about a decade ago. Now, a check can be presented to a bank at any time after it is issued, regardless of the date. Because of this, I would be even more suspicious of any plan involving post-dated checks - it would be a sure tip off to me that something was fishy.

AFTER THE DELUGE

Here in Florida, those of us with sense have "hurricane kits." They usually consist of a large cooler with wheels - light weight and can be rolled out to the car if necessary. Packed inside are the necessaries to get through a week or so. Almost everyone lives in an area that faces the possibility of disaster of some kind. Any responsible person should learn what that is and be prepared. Fifty dollars worth of stuff could keep you alive.

IRAQ IS NOT LIKE VIET NAM EXCEPT WHEN IT IS

I wonder if democratic government is even possible in a country where people regard their tribes as more important than a national government.

BLAME IT ON ELVIS

The Elvis fans, for the most part, and a lot of the Beatles fans, were not boomers, but were that unnamed generation immediately preceding - the one that gave us Trent Lott, John Kerry and Lee Harvey Oswald. In 1954, the oldest boomer was only 8 - in 1964, only 18. This unnamed generation also made up a lot of the beatniks. A fair number of times something is attributed to boomers, but, in fact, it belongs to this other generation.

I remember my older cousins, they are 70 or so now, being the first revolutionaries - they were the Elvis fans - the James Dean fans - the Brando fans, and were the first to rebel against "the fifties" even though they were maturing right in the middle of them.

NOT ABOUT BARRY BONDS

Compare the career home runs of what's-his-name and Aaron. Aaron hit 40-or more home runs seven times in his career. His highest total was 47 (or maybe 48). His home runs were rather consistent from year to year, but, as you would expect, began to trail off as he got older. 1973 looks a bit strange, as his home run total went up to 40 - but keep in mind that teammates Davey Johnson and Darrel Evans also hit more than 40 that year, so opposing pitchers weren't able to pitch around Aaron. Look at those numbers and you'll see how obvious the cheating is.

A SURREAL DEBATE

Just in case folks have forgotten the intransigence of Saddam, and the worthlessness of UN resolutions, back in 2003 before the invasion, I compiled a list of the resolutions on Iraq.

SMELLS LIKE VINDICATION TO ME

This is a reason I thought Saddam should be left alive. There was always the threat he could be returned to power.

OF GRASSY KNOLLS AND BLOOD FOR OIL

It has always interested me that one of the earliest critics of the Oswald as lone assassin conclusion was Sylvia Meagher, a widow who lived in Greenwich Village and who had worked for the U.N. for a couple of decades. She was exactly the kind of liberal idealist who became disillusioned after Kennedy's death. Her second book, Accessories After The Fact (1967)actually accused the Warren Commission members of actively covering up a conspiracy.

BTW, Jim Garrison never appeared in the courtroom during Clay Shaw's trial. He forced a couple of his assistants to actually try the case.

IT'S NOT DEAD. IT'S RESTING.

Mr. Bush doesn't even understand current law - he appeared just up the road from me at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Georgia. He brought along Secretary Carlos Gutierrez and Senator Mel Martinez, pointed out they weren't born in this country, and then claimed they are examples of what he wants from his amnesty bill.

He doesn't understand that Secretary Gutierrez and Senator Martinez have nothing to do with immigration law - they are Cubans and Cubans are considered refugees under the Cuban Adjustment Act (signed by Lyndon Johnson in the 60s). They came to the US under the law and sought asylum - they did not sneak in contrary to law and seek amnesty.

The bill is a nest of idiocy.

FRED THOMPSON: THE MAN, THE MOMENT, THE MESS

Fred also courted another important demographic - old folks who vote. He sat in for Paul Harvey on the radio for several weeks to reach them.
