Excellent post. In addition to Moynihan, another commentator in the 1960's understood the dynamic of LBJ's programs on blacks: Eric Hoffer, the longshoreman-social philosopher from San Francisco. His book, The True Believer, came out in the 1950's but he wrote extensively on this subject in the 1060's and 1970's. His book and essay's are very much applicable to the present state of affairs and I hope people start reading him works again.
