Also, anyone here remember "compassionate conservative"? Bush spent 2000 convincing people that he was a new type of conservative, then tacked hard right the instant he took office. Either he had some "Road to Damascus" style epiphany, or he was being deceptive for the entirety of his campaign. Rick is fretting over something most mainstream candidates do: hide the extremities of their ideology. Hunter, Tancredo, Sharpton, Keyes, and Paul can all be honest about who they are because they won't win.
And Rick, you have to be blind and deaf not to hear the vitriol from conservatives over the word liberal. Go conservative book publishers and count the titles with "liberal" used in some derogatory fashion. We on the left (broad brush alert) attack people: Bush, Rummy, Gonzales, etc. You on the right attack the entire movement of your political enemies.
As for Nixon, he was a conservative. You guys say you're for small government, fiscal responsibility, and strong defense. You had total control over the federal government for 6 years. How fiscally responsible were you? How much did you shrink the federal government? And you threw a lot of money at defense contractors, but how much did you give to the soldiers themselves? Walter Reed, body armor, raising their meager salaries? Hell, George Bush threatened to veto a raise to the soldiers, because he thought it was more than they needed. I understand why you conservatives keep the rose colored glasses on. The unvarnished view isn't pretty.

Sorry for the double post, but I left something out of the above:
One thing I can respect about the man is that he clearly finds the process of running for president distasteful. For whatever I may disagree with the man in regards to demeanor or policy, he had a level of dignity greater than any of the candidates who grimaced stiffly though yet another state fair steak fry and baby kiss-a-thon.

I am amused by the laughter on the left over “Grandpa Fred†and his laid back demeanor. Perhaps if they examined their own fascination with the celebrity candidates on the Democratic side – an empty suit of a man running a campaign of cotton candy platitudes and half thought out policies along with a ruthless shrew whose grasp for power and influence is only slightly less nauseating than that of her philandering husband -they wouldn’t be quite so dismissive. Given that their likely candidate has a personality that makes Leona Helmsley look like a civic saint, one would think a little less gloating on their part might be in order.
Less to do with his demeanor than the fact that he accepted people's money, and then did little with it. Speaking for myself, I can handle giving to a candidate that tries and loses. I'm less tolerant of a candidate who takes my hard earned money and then lounges through his/her campaign. Say what you will about Hillary and her lust for power, if I gave her money (and I don't) I know she'll use it to good effect (for her, anyway).
There's not one perfect candidate in these races, and there hasn't been for years. There's no Reagan for you guys, no FDR for us. Just the least imperfect.

So do you think a Democrat leaked this to make his/her own party look bad? If not, what other possibility is there?

I'm sorry, but waaaay over the line, Rick. If you have some evidence that "Clif" has engaged in pedophilia, by all means, pass it to the police immediately. Otherwise, it's as out of bounds as Godwinning (more so, in fact)
