WHAT'S IN A BOW?

Maybe Obama was trying to make up for Bush blowing chunks on the Japanese Prime Minister in '92. Dee

WHY AMERICA NEEDS A SHRINK

If you have ever had to deal with the health insurance industry as a patient/consumer...you would realize that we have already lost the battle. I have no fear of government coming between me and my doctor, or having the terms of my health care dictated to me...I have been experiencing it for years. The only difference I can see is that rather than some insurance company flunky I will have to deal with a government flunky. I have been getting my health insurance through my job with a Fortune 500 company for over a quarter of a century. I have raised 3 kids to adulthood and wandered through the maze of having the insurance company reject even the most basic procedures and treatments, and then engage in a telephone/USPS campaign to have things approved. It appears to be their default position, say no and then let the insured waste countless hours dealing with nonmedical people to get medical treatment. This coverage has never been cheap. Costs have gone up and coverage down, every year for as long as I can remember. I have been force to change doctors for my kids and myself because my employer changed insurance companies. There is nothing in this reform that frightens me. Death panels?...bring 'em on!

MORE THAN POLITICAL CORRECTNESS OR VICTIMHOOD AT WORK IN FORT HOOD ATTACK

I have been stunned by the insistence of some to "label" the Ft. Hood attack with the terrorist tag. This is the kind of misdirection and oversimplification that serves no purpose other than making some feel comfortable with strictly defined parameters. Our inability to think outside the lines is what has landed us in this mess. The ball was dropped at Ft Hood, just like it was prior to 9/11/'01, by people who thought small, and needed everything and everyone neatly confined to outdated, and ultimately useless classifications. I am personally more interested in the systemic problems that for years allowed this man to continue, and indeed flourish in the US military, who needed merely to refer to the UCMJ for how to deal with this guy...but did nothing. Sounds eerily familiar to the FBI field agents who in 2001, reported an uptick in middle Eastern men taking flying lessons...information which their superiors ignored. This is bigger than the same old "PC' argument, which is just played...this problem runs much deeper, to an apathy and unwillingness to get involved. Too many of us are in too big of a hurry to force people, events, and ideologies into a familiar, comfortable box. As the old saying goes...when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Dee

THOUGHTS ON THE PASSAGE OF HEALTH CARE REFORM

"I think it was too much to ask the GOP to have anything to do with this bill. They are just too small a minority to have had any impact at all in “lessening the damage.”
Unfortunatly, we'll never know what impact the GOP could have had on the debate and the bill itself. Another reason their strategy (if indeed there was one) may backfire on them is, unless the entire economy collapses under the weight of the cost of health care reform, most of the country will see it as a success. Conservatives promised such a doomsday scenario that anything less will make them look foolish and alarmist. I suspect that while the Dems may take a hit in 2010, by 2012 Obama will be running as the guy who brought back the economy and finally fixed health care. Dee

You cannot turn back the tide...health care reform has been coming, and conservatives have blown a golden opportunity to influence the debate (and perhaps lessen the damage)by standing still and refusing to budge. You fight the fights you can win, but you never abdicate your seat at the table.

I am sympathetic to this argument on a philosophical level, but practically speaking, I think it was too much to ask the GOP to have anything to do with this bill. They are just too small a minority to have had any impact at all in "lessening the damage."

THE HOPELESS BANALITY OF THE BLOGOSPHERE

“Trying to glean motive when a madman acts insanely is an exercise in futility. ” You are spot on! Trying to tie Hasan to radical Islam is like trying to link Jodie Foster to John Hinkley.

WEAK TEA

You are missing the point Rick. 200, 300 or 500 groups of people here and there scattered throughout out the country protesting on the same day adds up to at least as many people that show up to a typical anti-war protest in DC. Its seems to me that the foundation has been laid for the participants of these individual protests to join and plan a massive protest in DC. Would this meet your approval?, not that it matters, I doubt very much that you will be asked to participate.

ARE WE DAYS AWAY FROM WAR WITH IRAN?

There is certainly something in the wind, Rick. Iran's aggressive action in snatching the British Marines and their almost completed dealings with Russia not to mention (as Bush has been pointing out lately) they have been supplying the Iraqi insurgents with sophisticated weaponry. All this points to the shadow of Iran wanting to get in on the action. I think also the fact that we are just now gaining some measure of success there, the stage is clearing for Act 2. Here's my take.

SOME OTHER THINGS THE "PEACE BELL" SHOULD BE TOLLING FOR

The dropping of the bomb on Japan saved the lives of my father and his two brothers, who were all POWs at the time.

From this Australian - thank you, America.
