IRAQ: THE WITHDRAWAL CLOCK IS OFFICIALLY TICKING
Andy: I most certainly DO understand the nature of Insurgency warfare; it's something I studied, and trained for, for a decade and a half!
From the Boer War, to the British in Malaysia and Oman, to Vietnam, to the Mau Mau's, to the Shining Path in Peru, to Northern Ireland; you name it; I studied it, read the propaganda, and we trained for it!
And winning battles is MOST certainly important! In ANY conflict! Even insurgencies!
People often cite the British success in Malaysia, as a successful counter-insurgency, but there are other examples.
The Shining Path in Peru, was defeated by combination of the Peruvian Government/Military RELENTLESSLY pursuing the leadership of the Shining Path and capturing or killing them all!
The British in the Dhofor insurgency of Oman, is another successful counter-insurgency completely overlooked, all the time.
The bottomline though, as General T. Sherman proved on his "March to the Sea", the Larger Center of Gravity in ANY conflict, including Insurgencies, is the absolute destruction of the enemy personnel! It is not the occupation of land, it is the destruction of enemy personnel!
Where the real success comes in how ever, is recognizing that EACH insurgnecy is unique, and can have MULTIPLE Center's of Gravity, and even changing ones; the success of the CI relies upon the Prosecuter of the CI, to recognize those COG's; take advantage of those COG's, get inside the OODA-loops of the CI instigators, and destroy them!
We did not fail in Vietnam, because as you say, we decided the COG was enemy personnel; we failed in Vietnam because THEY realized that OUR COG was our Leftists and Defeatists at home, and they took advantage of our COG more than we took advantage of THEIR! That is a FACT!
General Giap himself, has stated it many times, and written about it as well; basically, we had not chance on the battlefields of Vietnam against America, we won the War on the Streets of Americx!
Who better to explain why you "lost" a war, than the General of the side that "wom"!
We know what the COG's are of the Iraqi insurgency: relentless pursue the leadership(s) in all it's myriad forms: local Sunnis, Al Qaeda, etc.; and KILL Them!
Additionally, it's a fact, with the killing of Zarqawi, we finally go inside Al Qaeda's OODA-loop for the first time; the amount of "intel" picked up, has lead all summer and fall, to an ever tightening circle being drawn around the Al Qaeda, and not the local's leadership, and it just continues to feed upon itself!
They ARE in disarray, even if you, and the MSM, refuse to recognize it!
Other COG's in the Iraqi insurgency, are similar to the COG's in the Shining Path; at least vis a vis Al Qaeda; it is a personality cult; with the Shining Path, it was a Personality cult built around Guzman, when he was captured, it almost brought the insurgency to a complete standstill!
And a major COG, in Iraq, is the support of the local populace for the insurgency; this is always a very close second COG to the first, which is killing the enemy personnel!
When the Shining Path started to lose the support of the local populace, along with the relentless pursuit by the Peruvian military, it was doomed.
When the Dhofarian rebels lost the support of the local tribesmen, along with the relentless Sultanate and British pressure, they were doomed.
The British employed the successful strategy, in both Malaysia and Oman, of isolating the insurgents from the local populace, and combined with the atrocities committed by both insurgencies, enjoined that success! Despite what the Leftist-inspired history books say about Vietnam, I served with, and researched, and spoke with MANY veterans of Vietnam, who said the Strategic Hamlet program, WAS in fact, working, and would've been successful, especially as being employed by the Marine Corps; but that General Westmoreland came in, and decided that HE would win the war with Airpower, and Mass land battles, and that change in focus, is what caused the war to drag out, and give the NVA/VC time to win the propaganda war!
This type of strategy cannot be successful in Iraq, due to the more urban nature of the insurgency, the terrain (desert instead of jungles); and the large population (instead of sparse and/or jungle like Peru and Oman).
So, the main COG after killing the personnel/leaders, is to TRY and win the hearts and minds Iraqis, and to AGRESSIVELY take advantage of the atrocities that Al Qaeda and the Sunni insurgents continue to commit against the local populace!
If you've been paying ANY attention at ALL, to the news that comes out of Iraq, from Al Qaeda and the Insurgents themselves, they are only TOO painfully aware, that this is their Achilles Heel, adn that they are in fact, LOSING this aspect of the War itself!
So, as I said in my original post; the $64,000 question is; will WE be successful, in exploiting the COG's of the enemy, FIRST, or will the Leftists in this country, sensing another Victory against the US Military, allow Al Qaeda and the Sunni Insurgents, to exploit OUR major COG first, which is our cut-and-run-defeatist-Leftocrats, thereby handing them another victory "...on the streets of America..." that wasn't earned on the Battlefield???
And Andy, be very careful, in telling a former Marine Infantry & Intel Officer (ME); that I know nothing about the fundalmental nature of Insurgency Warfare, it may come back to haunt you!

Here's an interesting piece of history: during the ENTIRE Vietnam War, the NVA/VC NEVER won a SINGLE Battle, involving a military unit the size of a Platoon (36 men) or higher! Company, Battalion, Regiment, Brigade, Division, etc.! That's incredible! And yet, we still "lost" the WAR somehow???
In Iraq, it's even WORSE than that!
In Iraq, the terrorists/insurgents, have had NO military victory, in ANY battle, at the SQUAD level (13 men!) or higher, all the way up to Combined/Joint Task Force!
Think about that, and tell me, why did we "lose" Vietnam, and why WILL we "lose" Iraq...............
ONE Word...................LEFTISTS......who HATE America....

I said I would come back on this issue, and thus I have too:
My original take, on another post, and on several other Blogs, was that the NK's faked this "nuke" test; no radiation for a week, seemed to confirm it!
Anyway, regardless, it now appears that I was INCORRECT, and my "call" was wrong.

The pathetic and disgusting fact is, the only alternative to the Republicans, are the Hate-America-First party, the Surrender-to-the-Jihadis party; the Party that despises George Bush for no other reason that he is George Bush, the Party that literally has the same talking points as Al Qaeda, the Party of Anti-Americans such as John Kerry, Teddy Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, etc.; the Party that literally wants to destroy this country, and it's way of life, and that is the DEMOCRATS.

Phonics: I understand your points; and I'm not sure that I said that Republicans resign because THEY are nobler than Democrats!
It's all too obvsious, Abramoff, etc., that absolute power, corrupts absolutely!
No doubt about that, when the Republicans lose, either or both Houses these mid-terms, notice I said a POX on them, because the damage is at least 75% SELF-inflicted; so they had to work to EARN that!
But to get back to your main point, I don't think that Republicans are "nobler" that Democrats, and resign because they are so; I think I was implying that they're held to a Higher Standard, by their own party, and the public, and the Press, and the Democrats, mainly because, I think, that they do portray themselves as the values and family values party! (I'm a registered independent by the way!)
This actually sets the bar higher themselves, and gives them less wiggle room, when they do succumb to their human foilbles, for example!
Imagine for instance George Bush caught in a Clinton Lewinsky type scandal; do you really think, he could, or WOULD remain in office?
That said, if you're driving towards this point, I wholeheartedly agree: We NEED a viable, strong, THIRD party, because NEITHER of these two groups of Bozos is getting it done!
As corrupt, off the path, and wrong, BOTH parties are on, on a multiple of issues, I think the 2-party system has outlived it's usefulness, and I think it largely the reason for the increasingly partisan atmosphere we find ourselves in!
For example what does a person like me, how personally believes in the following:
a) the right for women to choose, but LIMITEDLY; i.e. abortion shouldn't be used for "birth control", because you're too lazy, or drunk some night, to take precaustions
b) the death penalty is necessary, but I fully recognize the fact that our current judicial system is UNFAIR, and "justice" is applied UNEQUALLY, based upon race/socio-economic class!
Those are MY beliefs, I'm NOT opening them up to debate, I'm stating them to make a point: based upon My beliefs, WHAT party to I belong to?
I don't fit neatly into either, and yet, I'm forced to technically support some issues I don't support, by voting Republican, and vice versa!
That's nuts!
So, as a former military member, who believes that patriotism, and service to country is the MOST important thing we can do, as citizens, I've been reduced, the past 4- 5 elections, in voting for the person that I thought, would BEST protect American, and all the other stuff that I disagree with, I HAVE TO IGNORE!
That's nuts....and it makes us all, in a sense, hypocrites when we vote!
Unless of course, you believe 100% in the party plank, which I don't; and I'd suspect, that probably more Americans are in the "middle" with most of the issues, than on either right or left wing extremes!
But we don't have that choice, unfortunately...

.....and, I might add: I agree, they're all culpable in some way, for whatever reason: incompetence, politics, afraid to tackle a 'gay" member; whatever!
But it does illustrate the different Standards, that the two parties hold themselves too, and are in fact, held to by the public and the MSM:
Republicans resign (Livingston, Foley, Lott, Delay, Ney, Cunningham), and are forced to admit fault and misdeed (all of the above)......
Democrats refused to resign (Jefferson, Stubbs, Clinton,Murtha), are elevated to Rock Star Status and Democrat Hall of Fame status (Clinton), enjoy widespread support(Clinton), write books(Clinton), appear on Oprah (McGreavey), and earn incredibly large speaking fees(Clinton), and get re-elected (Stubbs,Murtha etc.)!
Somebody tell if something isn't wrong with this picture?

But in the most important issue, as to whether they are Americans, care about America, and will protect America, it's almost an unimaginable disaster, to think of the Hate-America-First-Party, the Leftocrats, in charge!
It fills me with a dread, I have not experienced, since the prospect of a "President" John Kerry!
They will force a withdraw from Iraq; terminate the NSA/SWIFT programs, block any potential Supreme Court Nominations, and in all liklihood, seek to impeach the President.
I shudder, at the prospect of what these Leftist Buffoons will do....

Clarice: Foley is a scum predator, so I'm happy he's gone.
Right now, all the rest remains to be seen.
But I have a question; you quoted the DC law that says a "minor" is someone who has NOT attained the age of 16 years, correct?
I'm not trying to skate for Foley, but that's curious.
Does that mean the DAY you actually reach 16 your are legal?
And, also, the IM's I saw, quoted on the Drudge, the "boy" was telling Foley, that he was underage, NOT YET 18!
Could you just clarify that please?
Also, I'm making NO excuses for FOLEY, or Republican leadership; I'm still waiting to see who knew what, and when they knew it!
But, I find it interesting; my wife chats online, with friends, and chatrooms via IM, and I know she has no COPIES of her various IM chats!
How do you get copies of those things?
That would, actually indicate prior intent to GET Copies, correct?
Is there proof, in fact, that it WAS in fact, the same "boy" who Foley sent the emails too, as to whole was on the other end of those Chats?
Have you seen those NBC specials, where they trap all those Paedeophiles via the chatrooms, and get them to arrange meetings, and then show up?
IF those shows are correct, it's not the chatting that is illegal, it's the set-up and the actualy rendezvous that gets them over the line!
Is that correct?
Could it be they set Foley up for a "meet", and he didn't go, so they released the messages?
Just curious; it is an interesting incident.
Bottomline though, Foley is scum, and needs to be gone; he knew what he was doing, and in typical predator function, by being the sponor of the legislation, he was using his office to put himself in a position of being around more teenagers; that makes him Michael Jackson like in his sickness.
For the Republican leadership; I'll wait a bit, but IF they knew, screw them too....
