"THE SUNSHINE OF OUR LIVES"

I happened to be at the beautiful confines on the day Mr. Banks hit his 500th home run. It was one of those typical frozen ropes that ended up in the second row of the left field bleachers. A historic blow - at that point only 11 people had struck so many home runs in a career.

I never saw him play shortstop - he was playing first base at this point of his career. But he was always a gentleman--after the game he was going up to the broadcast booth to be interviewed and he slowly made his way up the stairs shaking hands with fans (including my father) all the way--and always ready to "play 2".

Time always obscures, but can you find anyone who says Ernie Banks was anything other than a fine player and competitor?
