After Obama is elected our do-nothing Congress will no longer have any excuses for their inaction. Will Democrats seize the moment and immediately start keeping their 2006 promises, or will they merely shift the blame from the Bush administration to the Bush legacy? Should the Democrats fail, the ground will be quite fertile for a 3rd-party to take root.

The polls also reflect a certain "politically correct" coefficient, where the respondent states publicly they'll be able to support Obama, but will cast a vote for McCain once in the privacy of the voting booth.
I'm not sure that that will be the case. Pollsters are pretty clever at finding out how a respondent thinks. In fact, they usually ask the "who do you support question" twice - once at the beginning and once at the end of the interview. In between they throw in a few loaded questions that reveal the true feelings of the voter with regards to each candidate.
Campaign pollsters are experts at this - truly magical at gleaning the voters deepest feelings about a candidate. Pollsters like Gallup and Rasmussen don't ask 1/2 the questions that the campaigns will ask during hte course of an interview. This is why the race is probably seen as a little tighter - 2-3 points - among the internal campaign polls as they are for the rest.

The first thing which popped into my head when I started reading this piece was the endless angst-ridden bleating coming from faux progressives about how conservatives "vote against their own interests." And then there it was in the 7th paragraph. :)
Quizzically, these are the same people who would tell you with a straight face it is conservatives who have a big problem with authoritarianism.

The question that I would like to examine in a serious manner is whether we can really believe that the probable Democratic candidate for President of the United States loves the country of his birth.
A good question, but there is no purely objective answer.
Having tossed that bomb allow me to fling another; does it really matter one way or another?
It seems to matter most to people who could never bring themselves to vote for a black man or a Democrat anyway.
Two good points but I think a lot of Democrats would be concerned if Obama's feelings for America were more than conflicted.
