HAMSTRINGING INTELLIGENCE

"While the executive sees oversight as a simple matter of informing Congress of activities mandated by statute, lawmakers want virtual veto power over these same activities. And this collision becomes overheated especially when secret activities such as the NSA intercept program are leaked to the press. Congress plays the injured party of not being “informed” while the President has followed the letter of the law and briefed the appropriate members. Meanwhile, the President’s opponents can accuse the Administration of carrying on a program with “insufficient oversight” despite the fact that Bush has discharged his responsibilities in this regard."

.....

Of course, these are the same people who, when given the opportunity to question Hayden out of the sight of the cameras and public scrutiny, stayed away. According to what I hear, only 7 showed up for the closed-door session yesterday! Is this anyway for Congress to discharge their "oversight" duties? I think not! Sometime later they will be back to bitching about not being informed. Morons!

VENGENCE IS THE LORDS: JUSTICE IS OURS IN MOUSSAOUI CASE

I confess I am of two minds on this also, but I am DEFINATELY OF ONE MIND on this:

According to Captain's Quarters this morning, France is going to request extradition there to serve out his sentence. Right. So they can release him as soon as he gets there? In the words of one commenter over at CQ...bite me!!

WHAT'S WRONG WITH UNITED 93? JUST ASK DANA

I don't know if anyone ever watches the "business block" on Fox on saturday, but on Forbes On Fox, there was a discussion of the movie and it was a panel discussion.

I wished I had tivo'd it or something because one of the panelists said the following (not a direct verbatim quote, but as close as I can remember):

panelist - I predict that more people will see this movie on the internet, and that it will wind up being more of a PUBLICITY STUNT FOR AL QAEDA than anything else.

He was jumped on immediately by the host and others on the panel for saying such a thing but it didn't seem to matter to him.

That was just about a couple of hours before we went to see the movie and I can tell you, that this will NOT serve as an AQ propaganda film, it was the first AMERICAN victory in this war!!

Back in 1969, when I was on my way to visit friends who had been in a serious car accident, I had to walk through the military wards at Bethesda to get to their rooms. I was in the Navy back then and so were my friends. I saw for myself what war had done to the bodies of the men who fought there. There was one in particular that will remain in my memory for the rest of my life. His wounds were so grievous that I wanted to look away. I didn't. I made myself a promise all those years ago that I would NEVER look away.

Somewhere is written that "The cost of freedom is eternal vigilance". To me that means not looking away and facing evil head-on as those brave people did on Flight 93. God bless them.

IN DEFENSE OF COMMON DECENCY

Rick,

Don't forget the absolutely revolting and dishorable habit the left has of showing up at military funerals to protest! This above all is something that makes me furious! These soldiers who have lost their lives do NOT deserve to be used for political purposes by EITHER side. They should be honored by both sides! We are living in a free and prosperous nation in no small part BECAUSE of all those before who have sacrificed for this country.

WHY I'M NOT A LIBERAL AND OTHER STUPID QUESTIONS

Kender,

You are most likely right about that. Any concilatory action now would require a reasonable and rational response from them and we all know that ain't never gonna happen in this situation. I think I was just saying that it's too bad it got to this point. That's all.

Let's face it...there are enough earth shattering problems as it is without creating more by either mistake or design? I wonder if the Danish editors even "dreamed" what the result of their cartoons would be.

In a world where even rumors can cause major scale riots (i.e. Korans in toilets) and Hollywood stars who participate in movies in that part of the world where "fiction" is viewed as fact...we can only expect more of the same. When this Gary Busey, Billy Zane movie comes out I fear it will be much worse. I had really hoped that fellow Americans would have the decency and the sense not to participate in this hatefulness no matter what their politics but obviously they are. Why? Is it all just for money? Or is it hatred of their own country? I'm not sure which is worse. And people will die...because of a MOVIE that all too many in the middle east will be brainwashed into thinking is real.

Sorry off-topic a little...but some thoughts on the cartoon outrage. Here is food for thought at least:

Will Amadinajad's (sic) new suggestion that there be a Holocaust cartoon contest (very weird and disgusting) potentially raise an intriguing question?

In order to take up a pen and make a cartoon, will they have to put down their AK47s? Since cartoons themselves never actually hurt anyone, will this serve as a more acceptable alternative to violent outrage? Don't know. Just asking. And if Danish and other newspapers allowed some acceptable (non-violent) response to their editorial cartoons would would Islamics respond?

It sure would be interesting to find out. Just not sure how.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN: A PREVIEW OF THE NSA HEARINGS

Wanna place a bet that at least one of the leakers of National Security Secrets is Rock-e-feller? - scrapiron

NO WAY. LOL!!!

Didn't you love the pointed question by Grassley (I believe) about whether the leaks were being investigated? Of course, Gonzalez couldn't say much about that but he did say it WAS being investigated! FASTER Mr. Gonzalez please! And don't leave out the NYT or the WASHPOST.

I am watching with fascination. Thanks to Rick and many others who are posting their butts off about this issue. You guys deserve out thanks. Keep it coming.
