THE CONSERVATIVE CASE FOR GAY MARRIAGE

TTT, I have never advocated for discrimination against Gays. You make up points out of whole cloth, attribute those things to me, and then argue against them. Enjoy yourself.

Let's see, Truculent: aggresively hostile, belligerent, vitriolically scathing...where on this thread have I exhibited this behavior? It is a nice word, though, when used appropriately.

Perhaps you are feeling a bit truculent yourself, Mr ttt

The only civil rights trespassers in this area would be the IRS.

I am afraid it is you, Russell Miller who is spectacularly closed minded. If you can't get your way immediately, you will run to the ubers crying, "change the rules, change the rules". Well in this day and age, with the courts imposing themselves as some sort of tribal chieftains, it may happen. If the courts step in and make this decision against the will of the large majority of people, however, huge resentment very likely will occur. It is possible that court ordered gay marriage would actually reverse trends towards acceptance of the gay lifestyle. Did you even read my post? This needs to happen, if it needs to happen at all, by the will of society in general...not by the courts.

Vermont recently became the first state to legalize gay marriage democratically through their legislature. Although this was not a popular vote, these folks were at least elected officials. As I originally stated, that is the way it should be done. That is exactly the principal of Federalism in action. Those that are utterly offended can leave the state, others can move there if they so relish Vermont's progressivism.

As opposed to you, I am not proposing the courts should overrule the legislatures decision. I would leave that up to the people of Vermont.

Now please explain what is close minded about my position.

Michael Reynolds your first post threatened that Republicans won't get elected if they don't support gay marriage. That the youth will not vote for them because they supposedly want gay marriage. Well, maybe they do. The youth of society have always tended to be more liberal. I am not scared about that. One doesn't get to be old without having been young first and, yes, I was very liberal in my 20's. The opposite is equally true. Those youth will get old too. And they will become more conservative as they do.

So there...now we have both stated the obvious.

Michael Reynolds, when your young people "grow up" they can change their society however they would like. I either won't be around or I'll be too old to care. Until then, they will live in the society that us old folks created for them...and the old folks before us.

To me, not everything is about votes or political advantage. If this shocks you, please forgive me.

If, and only if, individual states vote to change the definition of marriage than change it. I see no Constitutional "right" to homosexual marriage. Anyone can claim that anything abridges their "right" to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happines. Claiming so doesn't make it so. Attack the tax code, if you like, for being unfair. One would , of course, be at the end of a long line in choosing that course, but have at it.

Marriage has had a very specific definition in western civilization for thousands of years. It has been the foundation of the common family and the bedrock of our society. Change it, not by judges, but by popular vote state by state, if we dare. But I say go very slowly with this. It must not be done as a matter of constitutional rights or we will be opening the door for any number of perverse relationships for which we did not bargain.

Beware of the boogaboo of unforseen consequences.

I, as a conservative, will continue to treat gays with respect in my personal relationships as I always have. Their lifestyle and sexual preference, as long as it does no harm, is their choice. I expect to get the same respect in return.

BLOWHARD NEW YORK TIMES CONTRIBUTOR A PARANOID LOON

Edward Cropper, you are correct about conservatives. Independent people don't rely on leaders, they are their own leader. Perhaps that is exactly why mounting a conservative movement is so difficult. But in this day and age, without a face and personality it is very difficult to influence the electorate.

Flyingright must not be paying attention. If he were, he would most certainly know what those of us with any intellect realized many months ago.

RICK MORAN IS THE LEADING VOICE OF CONSERVATISM IN AMERICA TODAY!

Well, maybe I'm exaggerating just a little. Actually there are many voices promoting conservative ideas. Mostly, though, conservatism is found amongst the quieter folk who live its constructs daily through their moral values, hard work, family allegiance, and fierce independence.

There are many voices of the left as well. And many quiet ones who, though well meaning, are simply misguided in their understanding of how best to help their fellow man. They haven't yet realized that by giving more and more control to a central power that is further and further away, they are actually commiting their fellow man, as well as themselves, to a life of misery under totalitarian enslavement. From the family to the city to the county to the state to the federal government and, finally, to the U.N. or some other world government, the power, the laws, the control comes from elite voices eminating from afar.

Some peoples personalities lead them to become hysterical when describing this erosion of liberty and deconstruction of human vitality and indivdualism. Others can discuss these events with calm intellectualism. It is left to us to preserve conservative ideals in whatever way we can until there arises a man or woman who can galvanize our emotions and intellect and lead a conservative resurgence. Critical ankle biting just seems a bit counterproductive.

I HAVE COME NOT TO PRAISE CAPITALISM BUT TO BURY IT

Surprise, surprise. Is Obama doing anything he didn't say he would do during the campaign? Is his behavior any different than one would have expected from his past family influences, education, alliances, and voting record. Was anyone paying attention? Were you reading Rick's columns during the campaign? Top it all off with Pelosi and Reid running a Democratic Congress and Mr O gets anything he wants...sometimes even more than he wants.

Our parents were the Great Generation. They were tough and they sacrificed for us. We are the generation of cowards. For all the reasons enumerated in thousands of venues (including the natural business cycle) our econmy goes south. Are we willing to toughen up and work through it? No we just want to take a numbing feel good pill. Obama is that pill. He's the sedative that too many of us wanted. Unfortunately when we wake, the nightmare won't be over.

In a proper capitalist system, executive pay would be overseen by a responsible and prudent Board of Directors in a publicly held corporation. Others have said it here. If those idiot hypocrits in congress start determining who gets paid what, the United States of America may as well replace our flag with a banana.

BRING BACK THE STOCKS!

Bob, you seem to be the only one posting here (including our host) who is intersted in sorting out the facts of the AIG bonuses before criticizing them.

As far as Dodd is concerned, I don't know if he wrote the amendment exempting bonuses, but he sure passed the bill on to the Senate and voted on it. Obama signed it. Did no one read it? Typical of our society today, no one is responsible for their own actions.

And the stocks for immoral behavior... that sounds like a truly "shovel ready" project that could be immediately assimilated into our Dear Leader's stimulus package. The trouble is, how do we make them "green" and are these jobs that Americans will do? We are gonna need lots of 'em.
