IF REAGAN TOLERATED MODERATES, WHY CAN'T TODAY'S CONSERVATIVES?

The conservatives in the Republican Party will need to reconcile their desire for purity with their desire for votes (and presumably a majority of the votes). John McCain is a conservative but clearly not as conservative as some of his Senate colleagues but clearly different than Specter, not to mention Collins and Snowe.

Please review this page: http://www.acuratings.org/ratingsarchive/2007/2007senate.htm

McCain lifetime rating ACU: 82
Specter: 45

I'm sure many would like him above 90 (just as I'm sure many liberal Democrats would like all Dem Senators to be at the <10 rating that our president was as a Senator). Clearly the parties are polarized (based on this and similar ratings). Unfortunately the public is not nearly as polarized. If you've followed the recent Pew surveys on party affiliation you'll see that the Republican Party has steadily lost membership to ...INDEPENDENT!

Moderates? Who Needs 'em

I did a lot of thinking regarding this issue this am while running. I've been a republican for 15 years and prior to that I was an independent. In making that choice I had to ask myself two questions:
1) Do I see a benefit in being a member of one party or the other?
2) If yest which party best represents my core political philosophies (and are there any big negatives that I can't get past. An example of that for some might be the party's abortion stance)

Rick post focuses on the latter question. I agree. What I worry about for the Republican Party at present is that few seem to be concerned about that large swath of voters who answer #1 "no" but still might be swayed to VOTE REPUBLICAN

IT'S SILLY TO BLAME A POROUS BORDER FOR SWINE FLU IN US

As a physician with an MPH I can say that immigration is not the issue in disease spread. As we have seen several times in the recent past American citizens have spread disease in the US after traveling to an epidemic area. I don't need to be a citizen of a country to spread disease I just need to be a visitor. To "close the borders" to disease spread we would need to stop all tourism. Imagine the economic impact of that!

WATERBOARDING: THE S.E.R.E. STRAWMAN

Rick;
I have to hand it to you, you certainly don't shy away from tough discussions.

Joe;
"Anyone who defends torture is just mentally sick. Its another one of the litmus test to be a conservative today, you have to defend torture. "
Ironic that you make that comment on this post by a conservative who has consistently decried torture.

And herein lies the most intriguing part of this whole torture debate. This is clearly developing as an issue that doesn't break along party lines (in spite of the desire of many in both parties who wish that it would) At this point in "the game" it seems to be playing out the same way immigration has (i.e. stark public differences in the Republican Party and quiet, below the radar differences in the Democratic Party). I'm wondering out loud here now: Will the way the immigration debate ultimately hurt the Republican Party with Hispanics, also come true in the torture debate with military voters?

DEMOCRATIC PARTY PARTISANS TO 'OUT' GAY REPUBLICANS

"I think Barney Frank has adequately put it when he says (paraphrasing), “You have a right to privacy, but not to hypocrisy.”
Uh ohh, then a lot more than a few gay Republicans are in trouble (including Mr. Frank)

Chuck;
"Social Conservatives built the very closet that gay people find themselves in. Your outrage at those who attempt to dismantle it seems phony, despite their bullshit means of going about doing it."

So how does this "dismantle" the closet? It would seem to reinforce the closet if being in the closet means that if people around me knew I was gay it would be humiliating, dangerous to my job ...Won't this reinforce that conviction?

A REPORT FROM THE FRONT

"Hardly anyone (openly) considers themselves Republican anymore."

Why does this sound so much like another quote "can't believe Nixon had won since no one I know had voted for him"

Rick;
And to follow up your last sentence:
"Why do you look at the speck that is in your fellow conservative's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?"

Heh - good one. Actually, when I'm wrong, I like to think I admit it - as I did with the tea parties. Can the same be said for all those who were skewering me before the election, saying Obama would never be elected and I was an idiot for saying Obama would win?

I thought not.

NOT A MISPRINT: OBAMA SEEKS CUTS OF 100 MILLION TO CURB DEFICIT

I'm recalling earlier discussions about the stimulus package and how any job was worth it the spending was "worth it". Now I hear that amount of cuts is "worth it". What appears to be missing are BASIC MATH SKILLS.

If George Bush had said in 2007 "we're reducing the number of troops in Iraq from 162,000 by 50 would there not have been a loud protest regarding such meaningless reduction in troops?

THE CONSERVATIVE CASE FOR GAY MARRIAGE

Rick;
You wrote "what we are left with is nothing more than how people choose to define their relationships where they feel love for another human being." Similar to several comments above, I would ask what is the state's interest in sanctioning any relationship two people would choose to have, loving or otherwise?
