WIRETAP JURISDICTION: WHERE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALL ALONG? (UPDATED)

Here is another angle...

Has the GWOT been decided???

One weird element regarding this conflict is the fact that there would be no signing ceremony aboard a battleship in the enemy's harbor.

Maybe the Islamofascists have been largely beaten back and it is time to back away from 'war-time' measures. How many major threat notifications have we dealt with in the last six months? There was the liquid bombing attempt - but that was interrupted. Maybe the global jihad is a spent force - for at least the time being. There are even reports of Zarqawi’s replacement demanding (ordering) al-Qaeda in Iraq out of Baghdad. Are the Shiite and Sunni thugs really a threat to the American homeland?

What would a decent President - one who had to make tough, grey area, decisions with crappy intel and short time horizons - do when the threat of global jihad is declining?

Maybe soon even President Bush will be talking about the children and health care or other things inane...

Maybe we have ‘won’!!!

Yippeee!!!

C'MON DEAN! YOU'RE SPOILING OUR PITY PARTY

Rick,

A poll within 5% margins in Senate races indicate a viable chance for holding or gaining the seat. AJ Strata uses a 6% number and is more positive - believing in polling response imbalances and GOTV. To me, those are probably worth 6 points in a poll taken Monday through Wednesday the week before an election.

I think the dead birds are Chafee and DeWine - the base will not GOTV for these clowns so that 3% will not help them. And, nobody is claiming that polls in those states are wildly over-exaggerating turnout for the Dems. Chafee doesn’t even get the Pollyanna vote.

Some Monty Python character is clanking Santorum on the noggin - but he's 'not dead yet'. His numbers are improving but Pennsylvanians seem intent on voting for a cipher.

So my personal read is -2 for Republicans overall… Resulting in a 53/45/2 mix with both independents voting Democrat caucus and on most topics.

Polling House races is garbage. There are too many reasons to list.

However, given that… Is it necessarily a negative to cull true Democrats from the Republican Party? I don’t mind centrists, but I don’t know why the Republican Party must officially sanction center left to left candidates. Another positive is that we are seeing where the candidates are when the chips are down. We will not have to back these washy chaps in the future simply because they are incumbents. Also, the 2010 census will take care of any gains made by Democrats in the Northeast.

Another positive is that regardless of the final count there are going to be many more DLC style center left Congress Critters. Who will be able to work with those folks – Pelosi or Hastert?

But, a huge negative is the one Party with decent leadership could take a big hit in a time of war. All the chaps that believe in government gridlock (I think Kudlow is in this group) are also forgetting we are at war.

Interesting times. I am just glad that we are the third most populace nation on earth. However, in times like these a parliamentary system would be nice. Can we survive two years of intense stupidity?

MORE RANK PARTISANSHIP FROM THE TIMES

Rick,

We will be running budget surpluses within the next two years. I know that sounds odd - but the trend lines are there. The National economy has grown by over 33% since 2000 (pre-war and at the height of Clinton’s economic miracle). If the tax base grows by 10% and the spending grows by 5% than we are within 20 Billion of balance in FY2008. Our tax base growth has easily exceeded 10% since FY2004 (after the 2003 tax code changes), and our spending is around 7.5%. Wow, that is not 5%... But, that includes necessary DOD growth and Katrina relief. This year the DOD could not even spend all it was allocated so that growth will be slashed and Katrina is basically funded. Katrina itself accounted for 2% of the spending growth. So 5% spending growth will not even cause a serious yawl from the Libs. In fact, a good year puts us in balance this FY (4% spending growth and 14% income growth – achieved in FY2005

And, those trends are accelerating with the advent of the PorkBusters concept - a concept made possible by the internet and the blogosphere.

And, note that Medicare and Social Security expenses came in significantly less than expected this year. Are folks working a bit longer? More likely, are retiring folks actually paying taxes on investment income (401(k), IRA) that prior generations did not have? Are we actually a bit healthier that we were twenty years ago?

RUNNING FROM HISTORY

If President Clinton decided to fight Islamofascism after:

the 1st World Trade Center bombing
the twin African Embassy bombings
the Khobar Towers bombing
the Cole bombing

would anyone have taken him seriously...

He looks like Winston Churchill compared to Kerry, Pelosi, Murtha, Biden, Kennedy, and the chairman of the Democratic Party - Howard Dean.

A truly pathetic clique they belong to...

Small and getting smaller...
