CIA DESTROYS TORTURE TAPES

It's hard to fathom the Right's position on this, which seems to be "so what?" Heck, Michelle Malkin even blamed the Democrats for it! Disgusting! To the Righties, there's no limit to the lengths our government should be able to go in the "war on terror." Torture. Secret prisons. Guantanamo. Extraordinary rendition. Heck, many on the Right suggested that freedom of the speech and other liberties had their limits here on American soil. It's all good in the good fight, right? How about if the government, based on the unnamed "reliable data" that always seems to be trumpted to justify the actions we thought only lesser governments engaged in, decided it was prudent to collect American citizens' guns to prevent an attack? How about making background checks more stringent and eliminating sales at guns shows, etc.? As long as the unconstitutional and/or illegal acts are perpetrated on other people in other places, the Right couldn't care less.

MALKIN'S CRITICS: APPALLING INCIVILITY

A couple of weeks ago when Malkin was subbing for the loathsome Bill O'Reilly, she belittled the band Pearl Jam and accused them of engaging in hate speech when their singer sang "George Bush leave this world alone. George Bush go find another home." She, uh, considers those words "hateful," huh? Yet I didn't catch her using the same rhetoric when singer Ted Nugent told his audience he wanted Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to "suck on" his machine gun and called them some truly hateful names. So, it's hard to buy into all the glowing comments about how strong and forthright she is, when she's a plain-old hypocrite like so many other talking heads.

BLOGS MISSING THE REAL STORY AS USUAL

Rick, on discrediting the war: "His lies did not contribute to a lessening of war fervor among the American people. George Bush, the Pentagon, the left, and the Iraqi government have all seen to that little detail, thank you."

One of these things (George Bush, the Pentagon, the left, the Iraqi government) is not like the others. Can you identify it? Hint - it would be that which did *not* have power.

A RESPONSE TO GLENN GREENWALD

Rick,

I like iamnot in comment #4 missed the registration window for commenting on MichelleMalkin.com.

When will another opportunity present itself. It is one of several blogs to which I regularly track back from my own blog, the Volunteer Opinion Journal. But, I would like to be able to comment from time to time on Michelle's blog too.

Any ideas? Thanks

Barry

ON GETTING SCREWED

How is Flynt hypocritical on this? He isn't attacking the Republican perverts for their adulterous lifestyles per se, but calling them out on the very issue that is the bedrock of their morally superior, God-fearin', we're-better-than-you values platform. We're all sinners, remember... But it takes a "scum of the earth"(according to one poster here)like Flynt to point out that those who are keen to judge others' lifestyles are equally "scummy." No, no...To find a real hypocrite you'd have to go to, say, another paragon of conservative values: The Rev. Ted Haggard -- the guy who railed against the homosexual "lifestyle" on Sunday, but did drugs and got "massages" from a gay prostitute during the rest of the week. THAT'S a hypocrite. Praise the lord!

SCOOTER SCOOTS AWAY

Is the Libby thing the biggest thing to happen to our democracy (such as it is)? No. But what it illustrates is that justice and the law take a back seat to politics and power. You right wingers are laughing about it, but you were apoplectic over Clinton, which suggests you weren't really upset over the alledged issues and their legality but that he "got away with something." Fine. Bush let Libby get away with something, proving the hypocrisy of the right. Curiously, the primary argument by those on the right who reacted so vehemently against Bush's immigration proposal was that it granted amnesty to people who did something illegal. Is there a difference here? The lesson appears simple: If you're poor and sneak into this country to wash dishes and mow lawns, you're Public Enemy No. 1, but if you're well connected you may lie under oath on behalf of the White House and it's no big deal, because, you know, there's "illegal" and there's "ILLEGAL."

SMELLS LIKE VINDICATION TO ME

So, why isn't the right calling Lugar and Voinivich surrender monkeys or accusing them of treason?

LAST WORD

I am continually surprised and impressed with your writings. As someone who leans to the left, I've tried to find opinions on the right that were more than the standard reiterization of the Bush Admin./Fox News talking points. I don't agree with everything you say, but your going out on a limb to admit your opinion of the war has changed seems just about unprecedented in the right-wing realm. It's a shame that such independent thought is met with charges of weakness or disloyalty.

TIME IS NOW THE BIGGEST ENEMY IN IRAQ

"Prescisely wrong. Time is our biggest ally."

Except that things are getting worse, and more Iraqis hate our guts. But from Bush's point of view (f*ck it up, dump it in 2009), you're absolutely correct.

ATTACK AT VIRGINIA TECH

Arming more people in the name of security without a process identify and weed out the nutcases is not the answer. About 10 days ago here in the Detroit area, a guy got fired on Thursday, bought a shotgun on Friday and went to the office on Monday morning, shooting up the place and killing the 63-year-old receptionist. That ain't right. Even if someone else in the office were armed, it likely wouldn't have prevented the receptionist from getting killed when the guy burst through the doors. Interestingly, the guy had earlier been denied a permit for buying a handgun, presumably because of a background check, but because of the goofy gun laws, nothing prevented him from buying the shotgun over the counter without a background check. This was a guy with a history of mental illness, but he still was able to buy a shotgun like it was a pack of cigarettes. Again, that it ain't right.
