ON BEING CALLED A 'RACIST'

Recently, I posted a message in our local newspaper online comment section and a conservative replied with the usual half-truths and misinformation, but the most interesting item was when he referred to Obama as the "Affirmative Action candidate." Uh-huh. That pretty much summed it all up. I know not all conservatives and Republicans are racist, but between that guy's comments and all the viscious anti-Islam/anti-immigrant sentiment of the last couple of years, it is all too easy to believe the GOP's slogan this year is: "I'm not a racist, but..."

TOP TEN THINGS THAT CREEP ME OUT ABOUT OBAMA

The 10 things that creep me out about the prospect of another Republican dictatorship ...er.. "presidency"

10. Compulsory Christmas observences overseen by the Department of Homeland Christianity

9. It costs $29 for a McDonald's hamburger and they still can't manage leave off the pickles when asked

8. There's a 70-foot-tall fence along the Mexican border, with lasers and heat-seaking missles, but crumbling roads, bridges and water systems in the rest of the country

7. The naming rights to the Washington Monument are sold off to either Wal-Mart or the Saudis to narrow the $500-billion budget deficit -- oh wait, Republicans don't care about the deficit, so that won't happen. Whew!

6. The NRA successfully implements its "Blame the Victim" lobbying strategy, getting a law passed that enables the prosecution of anyone who was shot by A) a disgruntled co-worker, B) a crazy ex-boyfriend, C) that 16-year-old gang banger on the next block or D) a random, psychotic loner who quit taking his meds for not carrying a gun, allowing himself or herself to be ambushed and not returning fire.

5. The Artic National Wildlife Refuge is reduced to the snow patch in front of Exxon's new "McCain/Valdez Memorical Artic Drilling Headquarters and Dick Cheney Polar Bear Hunting Resort"

4. Only the children of the wealthy, who have education insurance, are allowed to attend schools, conveniently and patriotically doing away with public/"socialized" education.

3. Liberals and other America-hating free thinkers -- those being anyone who remotely disagrees with the Republican Establishment or Rush Limbaugh -- are forced to wear identifying black arm bands in public at all times.

2. Discussion of dinosaurs in schools is permitted only in Science Debunking class -- and then only with the written permission of one's pastor, minister or other accredited theo-scientician.

1. Sean Hannity is appointed czar of the Office of National Morality and Patriotism.

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE FUHRER

I can't help but think the right's reaction to Obama's popularity abroad is a manifestation of what they know deep down would be the polar-opposite reaction to a similar McCain trip... And while Obama is in Germany, McCain's having lunch at a German restaurant in Ohio, between invite-only "town hall" meetings. Then again, maybe the old man thinks he's in Germany. His geography is a little fuzzy after all, not knowing that Pakistan and Iraq don't share a border.

LEFT DOESN'T HAVE A CLUE HOW TO SMEAR SOMEONE

Good post. It's true. Nobody can wallow in the mud quite like conservatives bent on preserving their sense of entitlement. And Lord knows they're good at it. Maybe it's because liberals don't have the killer instinct of gun-toting conservatives who've watched "Red Dawn" 1,000 times. The GOP/FOX News scorched earth policy of smearing Democrats is particularly effective for its unreliance on the truth and misplacement of context. Of course, it's all for the sake of God's candidate, right? A tip of the hat, then, to those amoral conservative smear merchants doing the Lord's work!

ENEMIES OF AMERICA! BE OF GOOD CHEER - HOPE IS ON THE WAY!

I don't see how the Bush administration's threaten-first-talk-never policies have tempered the threat of Iran. In fact, the Iraq quagmire has only emboldened Iran and Bush's rhetoric about a nuclear Iran being "unacceptable" has been followed up with what? Nothing. The gun strokers may enjoy all the "don't mess with us" and "we'll get you" talk, but what has it achieved besides $137 barrels of oil?

Let's turn that question on its head - just what in God's name do you think will be accomplished by talking to Iran? Will they stop their nuclear fuel cycle? Will they stop meddling in Iraq?

Of course not - not one chance in a trillion. The only difference is, you hand the regime a propoganda weapon of immense value by having our new messiah talking to them.

And we are talking to them btw - at the consular level where it belongs. And sanctions are still in play - as is the military option which no sane person desires but is there nonetheless. Plenty we can do short of having Obama make even more of a fool of himself than he already has on his ever changing Iran policy.

FEAR NOT - THE REPUBLIC WILL SURVIVE A PRESIDENT OBAMA

For Whatever: Wasn't it the Mission Accomplished speech that Bush declared the major combat operations were over? Did you forget that little line from the speech? And you must be one of those new no-tax-yet-spend-spend-spend Republicans who sees no problem with giving a blank check to an endless Iraq quagmire. Nefore you get too sloppy with your "anti-war" generalizations, I believe -- like many Americans -- the fight in Afghanistan is the right idea. It's the debacle of the Iraq invasion that is the colossal mistake that will harm this country for generations to come. And Bush has tried to play it both ways... On one hand he calls the war one of the most important fights for America, but yet he tells us to keep shopping. Oh, and there's plenty of room for tax cuts while we're mortgaging the country's future to pay for the war. Marvelous!! You believe his idea of sacrifice is patience? Are you joking?

I'm not being flip about it or saying this because I lean to the left on most issues, but compared to the policies of his administration, from the no-sacrifice war spending to the executive branch power grab and so many other Constitutionally-questionable policies, how could Obama, let alone anyone else, be any worse than Bush? Countless conservatives have come out in recent years to call him out on his abandonment of many of their core priciples, too. Don't forget that today is the 5-year Mission Accomplished anniversary. That sums up the Bush years quite succinctly. So, what's the worst that's going to happen with Obama? A move toward universal health care? Stem cell research?

My point exactly Barry - although the "power grab" and move toward an all powerful executive is, I believe, somewhat overblown by the left. Some of what Bush-Cheney did certainly falls in that category - torture, for instance. But some other exertions of executive authority I see as redressing a balance that had swung too far to Congress.

Hard to admit Cheney has a point about anything but even Clinton complained about it so it can't be totally erroneous.

SAVE THE NEW YORK TIMES!

Hmm... I didn't think conservatives actually READ the New York Times. I thought they just got outraged about it when Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh and/or Sean Hannity told them to.

STILL AT RISK: THE SHOCKING IGNORANCE OF OUR YOUNG

For Steve: If the the "socialist public school system" is so terribly wrong, how do you explain that other countries with "socialized" education systems -- I'm thinking Europe, Japan and in some cases, India -- are kicking America's butt when it comes to educating their young? I think it has less to do with the "socialist" aspect of public education and more to do with national priorities, or lack thereof on America's part. Upward mobility and future business success are clearly linked to educational achievement in other cultures, yet in this country our schools are merely worried about passing achievement tests this year in order to maintain funding. Those other cultures have their eyes on the prize; we don't. American teens rank, like, 24th or 25th in math when compared to other Western nations -- countries with socialized education systems. Until education becomes a serious national priority in America, it won't matter what type of education system we've got.

ENOUGH WITH ALL OF THIS "OBAMA IS A MOOSLIM" CRAP

Many of the comments here do little to disuade my opinion that conservatives are a bunch of irrational, illogical bigots. The thought that Obama is a ticking time bomb of Islamofascism that's set to go off an hour after his inaguration is beyond nutty. And you know what? I've heard that Obama believes the earth isn't flat, too. Think about THAT come November!!
