PANETTA WILL HAVE OBAMA'S BACK AT CIA

So he's not only qualified but an excellent choice because he will stop infighting and he doesn't come with any stigma associated with rendition or waterboarding?

In other words he's good for the PR and nothing else.

A NEW AGE NOW BEGINS

Great post Rick.

I agree - now that Obama will be our president it's time to find common ground with him and work with him on those things and vehemently oppose him in those matters in which we differ. You pointed out the key though - we need to pick our battles and nattering about every little thing will get us nowhere.

You've expressed the hope, as have many other conservative bloggers, that his lofty rhetoric of reaching out to conservatives will materialize. I don't share this 'hope' and expect this won't happen but if it does the opportunity should not be wasted in a frenzy of Obama Derangement Syndrome.

If it doesn't happen then we roll up our sleeves and fight for our principles - and my hope being - that we do it with reason, critical thinking and the strength of our principles and avoid the slip into becoming what we've abhorred these last 8 years in liberals: screeching partisans who try to elicit change with anger and hatred.

ELECTION DAY THOUGHTS

Old Paws,

Morality shouldn't be legislated? Name one law that isn't moral.

IF ELECTED, OBAMA WILL BE MY PRESIDENT

I don't know why some of us feel that to not act like deranged BDS and PDS liberals is the same as capitulating and being nice.

If Obama is our next president then I will give him the respect he deserves as the holder of that office. It doesn't mean that I won't criticize him when he does something I don't agree with, it doesn't mean I won't point out his mistakes. I will be calm and reasoned and there will be no hint of anger or desperation or derangement in my arguments or conclusions. It would be a mistake for conservatives to allow themselves to fall into the same camp as the nuts on the left who've been howling for the last 8 years. Obama will provide opportunities for legitimate criticism and perceptive and well reasoned arguments should slap him in the face when he does - not the rantings of crazed 'losers'.

I think that if Obama does win the election there will be as much, if not more, disappointment on the left as there will be on the right. He's riding to the Whitehouse as the liberal savior of all that's been wrong with our country in the past 16 years and there is no way he can deliver what's expected of him (even if the Congress shifts further left). Of course, the left will be there to complain about how the ONE is being stymied by evil conservatives if Obama falls short of their expectations but they will feel disappointment non-the-less at the outcome and even more rage towards us.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

ARE CONSERVATIVES ANGRIER THAN LIBERALS?

So Dave,
Is your point that McCain and Palin are firing up the neo-nazi's because otherwise it would have escaped the notice of the neo-nazi's that Barak Obama is half-black? That's what kills me about all this coded racist message crap - supposedly they are trying to scare people with the message that Barak Obama is black. If someone is going to vote against him because he is black they've already noticed who the black candidate is. Obama is getting more votes because he is black than he is losing votes because he is black.

One difference between Republicans and Democrats is how they handle the 'fringe' elements of both of their parties. Sure, there are crazy neo-nazi conservatives. They are completely shunned by every other conservative. How does the left treat their radicals? Well, they become professors, educators and are given a place at the table.

If McCain had attended, for 20 years, a church run by a white supremacist, worked repeatedly with an abortion clinic bomber, tried to stifle the free speech of opponents with legal action, or funneled tax dollars to radical right wing groups and a hospital where his wife worked (where she also coincidentally happened to receive an astronomical raise) liberals would be apoplectic with rage and fury that such a person was even nominated.

I'd say that by and large the conservative response to Obama has been pretty measured and reasonable.

Great post Rick.

It's curious how threatened liberals feel by conservatives.

I think playing the race card hurts Obama's chances of being elected. It's obvious that whenever this charge is trotted out - whether by Obama himself, other Democrats or the media - that it's complete bollocks. I imagine most people, instead of being fearful of being labeled racist if they don't vote for Obama would instead feel offended by the threat. I find it ironic that the political philosophy that supposedly prides itself on open-mindedness, tolerance and deep understanding can only come up with one reason why someone wouldn't vote for Obama.

OBAMA IS NOT A SOCIALIST

"The word is liberal. And you cheapen the word, perhaps even make it attractive by comparison when you put liberals like Obama in the socialist camp."

Do you consider European nations like Britain, France or Germany to be socialist? Or only the USSR of yore? If you define socialist as what the USSR was then, yes, my definition of socialism is a dilution of the classic socialism.

Since the Democratic party would love to turn America into Europe I would argue that 'liberal' and 'socialism' are synonymous.

Obama isn't a socialist?
I agree that his desire for power is his north-star more than any socialist ideology but he is as socialist as anyone with his political clout. Sure, by the strict definition of socialist he doesn't fit it to a tee but what other one-word way is there to describe his liberal views on governments relationship to the governed?

Whenever I've heard him called a socialist it's usually been implied it's the soft cuddly stifling socialism of modern Europe.

He does have socialistic tendencies that do worry me though - aside from the typical liberal Democratic desires to regulate everything for 'fairness' and 'justice'. One being that he employs strong-arm legal tactics to try and shut up his critics.

The word is liberal. And you cheapen the word, perhaps even make it attractive by comparison when you put liberals like Obama in the socialist camp.

PALIN PROVED SHE BELONGS

Good points all. But if you were honest with yourself you would see Obama falls even shorter of the standards you hold Palin to.

CONSERVATIVE COLUMNIST ASKS PALIN TO WITHDRAW

Tobias,

I've also heard that Obama is really a Muslim (in fact I can show you a clip where he refers to 'his muslim faith'). He also believes there are 59 states. His wife also hates America. How can we elect this terrorist retard for president?!?
