IN GEORGE WE TRUST?

I am interested that you identify 'pandering' by Bill Clinton but seem not to be able to recognize it in GWBush. His Iraq fiasco panders to the newly militaristic ideologues who all avoided the Vietnam war. His tax policy panders to his wealthy contributors and is intentionally not matched by budget discipline. He shows no care for generations but his own. His Terry Schiavo behavior was nearly as disgusting as that of Tom DeLay, Bill Frist, and Jeb Bush. Pandering? It seems to me that GWB has set new standards for crass political behavior. And his nomination of Miers is but the latest in craven acts. Those of you in the 'conservative' wing need to think hard about how much you have been suckered by both Bushes. They have had nothing in mind but their own political success; easily caving into shameless pandering whenever necessary. If anything GWB is actually even less principled than his father, a hard act to follow.

I KNOW WHAT WENT WRONG

Umm, no. Clearly the events were of natural origen. Thank heavens we humans rarely do such damage. But the response to it was completely human, and in the case of Bush's people completely inadequate. He looked and acted like an idiot. His people were incompetent. And they made it all worse by acting insensitive and above it all. You seem to have missed the perspective of the people on the ground in New Orleans and Mississippi. To them the response was a disaster, a man-made disaster.

BAINBRIDGE: A THOUGHTFUL BUT FLAWED CRITIQUE OF THE WAR

I am surprised by my first visit to this home of right-siders at the simple minded trust in GWB who has lied, dissembled and manipulated us all for 5 years. Not one of his policies has had the outcome predicted; rather they have benefited a small clique of wealthy business owners or served to irritate useful but not majority constituences. His most recent political deployment into intelligent design is perhaps the most egregious since it serves no one well: science is denigrated in service of politics, schools become battlegrounds for diversions of purpose, and even those who support GWB are puzzled about the point. He appears, like Nixon, to be appealing to a narrower and narrower constituency whose volume belies their size.
