BACKLASH AGAINST THE BACKLASH

Rick,

the fact is if you take the arab ownership out of the equation you would not be so worried.

Arab does not equal Al Qaeda, or even Al Qaeda leaning.

There is no getting around this fact about your side of the debate.

You and Michelle are afraid to take the risk of trusting an Arab owned company. Don't get on Bush's case or anyone else's because we cannot share your fear. Bush did not expect a large sector of America to lash out against this deal because Arabs were involved.

Don't kid yourself or us. Since the status quo of a British Company is not an issue it is therefore the Arab ownership. Bush believed we were beyond this visceral, emotional reaction to an unspecified fear.

You may not feel comfortable about how we see this issue, but no one made you react the way you did. Fear did that.

I am afraid your side has gone where too many of us, who stood side-by-side with you, cannot go now. That is not our fault that we resist your choice, and are somewhat taken aback and repulsed by it. Maybe that is not a sign of how awful we are, possibly?

It has been a pleasure blogging with you over the last months. I fear this issue has created a divide too deep to cross for a lot of us. Good luck on the path you have chosen.

THE DECISION

Rick,

Lynn was wrong - big time. So was CTU. Jack stops the larger attack and the terrorist with the remote device is heading back to the nest. If CTU had backed off and let the guy get there they could have detonated a few canisters and taken out the terrorists with some collateral damage.

If they were going to sacrifice Americans - best to do it taking out the terrorists as well.

"A TERRORISTS DREAM: AN AMERICAN NIGHTMARE"

Good job Rick. The potential for terrorists today to do this is low due to the need for the proper kind of ICBM. But that means so little if you look out ten, twenty years.

The military hardened their equipment because they were going to go into a possible nuclear ground war in Europe. There are many small yield devices that could take out areas of communication and weapons if not hardened. Everything they do has to operate in a high dose environment, but it was thought to be a short time.

Surprisingly, spacecraft need to be hardened as well in certain orbits because radiation doses upset their circuits as well. We fly through these glitches everyday.

I do not believe batteries are succeptable. If I recall correctly anything turned off is fine after the
pulse.

With all that, the scenario you painted is very possible and people need to wake up to the fact ICBMs make WMDs reach out and touch us.

IRONY PILED ON TOP OF ABSURDITY IN L'AFFAIRE d'PLAME

Great post Rick. I like your timeline of motivations better than any others I have seen (business opportunity turns into partisan opportunity). I was curious where you got the info that WINPAC had allowed the Niger documents to originally flow through to be included as valid intel. When did that occurr and did you have a source for that?

THE SUPERDOME AND CONVENTION CENTER: WHAT WENT WRONG?

Rick,

One thing that is important to remember in any disaster is to be able to adapt to changing conditions. You have done a great job with the timeline before, and now this excellent effort to show how Nagin and Blanco bungled so badly. But their most critical blunder was not changing strategies the minute the word got out those levies broke. I hope you don't mind a link back to my site (if you do, feel free to edit it out) but in the middle of this post (http://strata-sphere.com/blog/index.php/archives/640) I discuss how all the people in the Superdome and Convention Center could have been moved to safer ground in Nagin move his buses the minute the levees failed. And likewise here (http://strata-sphere.com/blog/index.php/archives/641), Blanco should have immediately changed her position on the Red Cross supplying down town New Orleans. Not only did the Red Cross have much needed supplies, the vehicles they would use to drive the supplies in could also help ferry people out. Think of the difference in suffering if the Superdome and Convention Center had been evacuated by Midday Wednesday?

It was easily feasible if New Orleans and Loisiana moved once the nightmare scenario began with a levee breach. Up until that time differences of opinion on severity and response were understandable. Once a levee failed there should have been an all out effort to move those people ASAP.

THE HANDLE OF FAITH

Rick,

Excellent work! I also don't feel so bad I have trouble keeping up with your productivity, now that I see I have the handi cap of a day job.

Funny, being so new to this (now through my 3rd month) I realize I have fresh eyes to you more experienced folks. I realized I wanted to point to hard to find or forgotten information and add my persective on top. I think that is what helped me succeed. But I was also told to work with other bloggers to get recognition - do not be rude (and the rules of the blogosphere are dynamic AND arcane).

Great post.

ABLE DANGER, THE WALL, AND WACO

Rick, I think the Pentagon will dump what they have. Shaffer is probably not in much trouble. It appears there are 3-4 more Able Danger folks coming forward.

The one who could be in trouble is Gen Schoomaker, who I believe is the Army Chief of Staff right now. He was somehow related to Able Danger, I think in shutting it down in Jan-Feb of 2001, before the Bush team came on.

But Rumsfeld and Bush have no reason to cover up for Clinton era mistakes. None.

THE "OMISSION COMMISSION"

Regarding the Clinton appointment of Gorelick - it is even worse for Hillary.
